Circuit breaker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The circuit breaker's contacts are held closed by a latch and, as the current in the solenoid increases, the solenoid's pull releases the latch which then allows the contacts to open by spring action.
Circuit breakers for larger currents are usually arranged with pilot devices to sense a fault current and to operate the trip opening mechanism.
Small circuit breakers are either installed directly in equipment, or are arranged in a breaker panel.

 Installing A Circuit Breaker
In this case, the power was controlled by a 100 amp breaker on the main breaker panel.
The breaker that feeds this panel is upstream, at the main panel.
When the main breaker is turned off (in a typical one-panel house) there is still voltage in the panel, at the two big hot wires that feed the main breaker.

It is important, and good practice, to label fuses or circuit breakers with the location of the circuit (e.g., bathroom, kitchen or bedroom).
It is usually located by the electric meter on your home, although some circuit breaker panels also contain the main breaker switch.
However, if it's faster for you to access your circuit breaker panel or your fuse box than the main breaker or switch, turn all the breakers off or unscrew all the fuses to cut off power to the house.

Improving Circuit Breakers in our Prout Escale Catamaran
The custom made circuit breaker panel has spelling mistakes, breaker/load mismatches, and loads may or may not be attached to the breakers as indicated.
Thus, as we re-built the circuit breaker panel and the wiring throughout the boat, we also re-configured and re-labeled the circuit breaker panel.
Thus, we now use 100% of the breakers, and yet the wiring bundles are much simpler as we have elected to run "feeder" wires to the circuit breaker panel to a real bus-bar instead of hanging three wires off a "piggy-back" connector on the circuit breaker.

My advice on selecting a panel is to go to as many manufacturers as you need to find what you want in a ready made configuration.
Most manufacturers made panels in a modular form that allows you to combine various discrete panels is one coordinated arrangement.
Most panels are also available in a stock form, which means that you have to take what you get as far as breaker sizes.
