Teaching Aerial Breakfalls   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-02)
An instructor can’t blame some students for avoiding aerial breakfalls, however, when it is often the lack of a systematic means to teach the technique that proves to be the primary barrier to learning.
Standing in a relaxed, ready stance, raise your arms from mid-level until your lead hand reaches the level of your eyes, and, arching your back a little, turn the line of the hips and shoulders slightly, such that your torso is facing squarely to the front.
Another sequence of progressively less spotting is usually all it takes for the student to be comfortable and confident with adding the aerial breakfall to his kata, and I have the relief of knowing another fledgling member of the aikijutsukai has added considerable assurance of safety to his practice.

Martial Arts Planet - Using Breakfalls in the Street
In Shorinji Kempo we regularly do breakfalls on hard surfaces like cement and wood, in fact I learned them on a wooden floor; however our breakfalls are different to the normal falls I have seen and have been taught in other styles.
Breakfalls should be landed with the 'meaty part' of the arm / hand (not the elbow) This means that any damage to you as a result of falling over will be bruises and not breaks or sprains.
A breakfall is any way of minimising injury to yourself as you hit the ground; it doesn't have to be a beautifully artistic aikido roll.

 FM 3-25.150 Chapter 5
The most important point during breakfall training is to not try to catch yourself by reaching out with your arms, but to take the impact of the fall on the meaty portions of the body.
After initial training on breakfalls has been conducted, it must be followed up with refresher breakfall training before training on throws and takedowns.
Soldiers should be proficient in rolling breakfalls, and great care must be taken to ensure they know how to properly roll out while practicing (Figure 5-24).

Various breakfalling excercises are performed as part of a hapkido class.
A standard rolling breakfall can be adapted for many situations: (i) high as shown here, (ii) long over multiple crouching opponents, (iii) short from a push from behind for instance, (iv) low that is under an obstacle, (v) angled to avoid an obstacle from a push.
As with all rolling breakfalls after the roll has been executed it is desirable to face back the direction you have been pushed/come from in a fighting stance.

Your breakfalling hand is the one on the same side as your raised knee.
Since your breakfalling hand should still be on your shoulder, you can now give the mat a good smack with it, cupping the fingers and ensuring that as much of teh arm fromt he fingertips to the shoulder contacts the grouns simultaneously as yuor position allows.
Sometimes the inner reaps or the rear sacrifice throws require standard backwards breakfalls, and sometimes forward sacrifice throws need a rolling breakfall, but it's a very rare occurance where you actually need a bridge landing breakfall (for tomoe-nage if they hold on, it can be quite useful).

Breakfalls should be one of the things you learn right away in any art in my opinion.
Breakfalls are taught early in our curriculum and trained regularly.
I was under the impression that a lot of kungfu schools try to tuck into a ball (protecting the head) and roll when thrown...the theory being that a breakfall on concrete (possibly glass shards or any other debris as well) could be too damaging.

Breakfalls are emphasized in a number of throwing-oriented styles, including judo, jujitsu, aikido and hapkido.
In these styles, breakfalls are learned before any throwing techniques are taught; this allows students to practice more safely.
With proper practice, breakfalls will become second-nature, assisting you in times of bad weather or occasional clumsiness.

More advanced techniques are taught as part of the first and second breakfall forms.
Warning: as with all SulKiDo moves, do not attempt to perform the techniques until you've been trained by a qualified instructor - and please make sure you've read the notes on how to use the website pictures before trying to copy any of them.

I recall their reluctance to be the same as my own when I first learned breakfalls - a feeling of having to pull one's own teeth =~).
The method I recall that helped me overcome this fear was a variation of the over-the-belt fall: Shaking Hands Method: Nage and uke are in the same perpendicular position as you describe (nage faces east, uke faces north), but nage is kneeling (on his toes) instead of standing.

However, during training, breakfalls are VERY important because with throwing practice - after a 20-100 falls - you really NEED to know how to fall properly.

Yes you can turn out in a match etc but breakfalls give you some good habits that help prevent sicking your arm straight out etc even if you are not doing a classic breakfall.

Breakfalls are necessary to protect our body from injury against attacks and strong techniques.
From a training point of view breakfalls also make the body strong, and break some unfounded fears such as that of feeling helpless while being down on the ground, or that falling down means defeat.
It is well documented that the origins of Aikido empty-hand techniques come from a number of Ju-Jutsu styles, and in particular, Daito-Ryu Aiki Ju-Jutsu, the style that had the most influence on O-Sensei.
