 BREAKING AWAY
Breaking Away is a dice-free race game and one that is good enough to bear comparison with the standard setters such as Hare and Tortoise, Bantu and 6-Tage Rennen.
The basic idea in Breaking Away is that in a road race you have to use your energy efficiently and that means knowing when to conserve your energy by sitting in the pack and when to strike out so as to give yourself a chance of the points and the prizes.
Three things complicate matters: the first is, of course, that the others are trying to do the same; the second is that you are limited in your choices by the cards you hold, making forward planning a necessity; and the third is that at the one third and two thirds distance there are bonus sprints.

DVD review of Breaking Away - DVD Town   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
“Breaking Away” is a sweet, warm, thoughtful, lightly comic look at small-town youths on the brink of adulthood, a refreshing, coming-of-age teen movie that doesn’t insult our intelligence or embarrass us with grossness but relies on charm and humor for its insights.
“Breaking Away” is a part of Fox’s first round of “Family Features” on DVD that also includes “The Sandlot,” “My Bodyguard,” “Rookie of the Year,” and “Baby’s Day Out.” For my money, “Breaking Away” is far and away the best and most inspirational of the pack (although “The Sandlot” is not all that far behind).
There are two TV spots and a well-worn theatrical trailer for “Breaking Away,” plus trailers for each of the other Fox “Family Features” mentioned at the outset; and that’s about all.

The example in the rules is correct - that is to say, when breaking away it is possible to get a replacement value of less than 3.
(OK, it was sloppy terminology but the ruling still stands; the rationalisation is that a cyclist who has attempted to break away but has not managed to do so by more than 2 squares is worse off than had he remained back with the pack).
