Along the Hudson's eastern bank lies bulky Mt. Taurus, the all-but-vertical rock face of Breakneck Ridge, South Beacon Mountain (the tallest of the Highlands), and North Beacon Mountain, which looms large above the City of Beacon, clearly distinguishable by the communications towers near its summit.
The lower reaches of Breakneck Ridge attract scores of hikers in every season except winter, and the sight of so many cars parked in the pulloff of Route 9D just north of the railroad and auto tunnel two miles north of Cold Spring can be off-putting to hikers who enjoy isolation on the trail.
There is nothing like Breakneck in all the Highlands, and if your hiking appetite runs to the rugged, Breakneck is probably the testiest piece of terrain south of the Shawangunks, which attract not only hikers but rock climbers.

Breakneck Ridge is a mountain along the Hudson River between Beacon and Cold Spring, New York, along the boundary between Dutchess and Putnam counties.
Its distinctive rocky cliffs are visible for a long distance when approached from the south, and together with Storm King Mountain on the opposite bank of the river forms Wey-Gat, or Wind Gate, the picturesque northern gateway to the Hudson Highlands.
According to legend, Breakneck gets its name from the same wild bull as neighboring Bull Hill (also known as Mount Taurus), as the place where the bull finally fell to its death.

The Breakneck Ridge Metro-North Railroad station serves hikers and campers traveling to and from Breakneck Ridge, near Beacon, New York, via the Hudson Line.
It is only served by two trains (as of the October 2, 2005 schedule) each way (two to Breakneck Ridge in the morning, and two to Grand Central Terminal in the evening) on those days of the week, and only then as a flag stop.
It is 55 miles from Grand Central Terminal and travel time to Grand Central is approximately one hour 29 minutes.

This ridge is a steep exposed series of rocky crags which rises on the east side of the Hudson River to a height of about 1200' in a little over a mile.
As we got to the highest point on the ridge we could see South Beacon Mountain to the northeast (our goal for the day) and far to the northwest across the river we could see the Shawangunks and the Catskills.
The trail followed a parallel set of ridges about a mile north of Breakneck Ridge, and eventually brought us to Sugarloaf, a prominent 900' mountain overlooking the Hudson about a mile north of Breakneck Point.

The trail connects Breakneck Ridge with Mount Taurus, two long ridges climbing directly out of the Hudson a few miles north of the village of Cold Spring.
Due to inclement weather and a late train, we decided to explore this new trail by coming up Taurus which is not as steep as the Breakneck approach.
We ate lunch after crossing the bridge and before beginning the ascent of Breakneck, the long steep ridge we had been admiring on the way down from Taurus.

So, I did a little research at the NY/NJ Trail Conference website and gathered the detailed information for Breakneck Ridge near Cold Spring.
Breakneck Ridge is now in my top favorite hikes in my experience thus far.
The trail is only an estimated 3 miles, but is ranked “strenuous” in the hiking world.
