The original Ticket to Ride game was a winner of the German Game of the Year award (the Spiel des Jahres), and deservedly so, as this followup game is simply well-designed and terribly fun.
The board is a map of Europe, with a good number of cities represented and potential train routes between the cities.
However, we found that the game was surprisingly different from the Risk game we had grown up playing, not the least of which was the (in my opinion) considerably more interesting and strategic map that is used for the game.

By situating the game on an actual map of San Diego, the knowledge learned from playing the game is thus situated in terms of the learner's knowledge of the city.
Second, the game itself had to be designed to be playable within the specified time limits - this was achieved by estimating the average amount of time necessary per player turn and then designing the game around this.
The toilets that serve as the start of the game path are connected to the central path by their own paths, thus echoing the real-life connection of local pipes to the neighborhood sewer main.

The biggest challenge for a company preparing a successful board game for the computer is to provide incentives for consumers to see special advantages in the computer version.
Already that excites me, as the game is made more interesting by having 3, not 2, different types of playing pieces (neutral marbles make all the difference in the world); and there is something cool about pushing pieces off the board.
For many games of this type, you sit there making 50 or so moves and spend hours of play before a game is over, while here it can be closer to 20 moves and about a half hour (though it can vary quite a bit).

It's been common in the games I've played, both solo and face to face, to see the German mechanized units remain largely intact well into the game, whereas in the real battle they suffered steady attrition, with units like the 12 SS Panzer Division being virtually destroyed in the first week of fighting.
Many if not most games will see a considerable stack of eliminated U.S. units compared to a much smaller German pile, when the casualty ratio was more the other way around or at least more favorable to the Yanks, in the historic battle.
And even devotees of the game have noted that it's pretty easy to cave in the northern shoulder of the U.S. line around Elseborn, where the real German attack was broken to pieces by U.S. artillery and dug-in infantry.
