The breakwater is 1,550 feet in length, and consists primarily of a series of stone-filled timber cribs, or caissons, capped with large granite capstones.
The appropriation of $25,500 was used for dredging to the depth of nine feet at low lake level the shoal between the breakwater and the wharves, redredging the channel in front of the wharves, and repairing the breakwater by rebuilding the superstructure of the timber piers with stone.
The breakwater, which was built in the nineteenth century to protect the harbor in Plattsburgh Bay against wind and sea, does not serve its original function, and on the contrary, obstructs safe use of the harbor (personal interview, June 15, 2001).

 The Portland Breakwater Lighthouse
The Portland Breakwater lighthouse, commonly referred to as the "Bug Light", was constructed 24 years after a massively destructive storm wrecked most of Portland Harbor in 1831.
Additionally, the height of the breakwater was not sufficient to protect those traversing the path from waves breaking over at full tide, guaranteeing the keeper would be soaked by freezing cold water and further adding to the treachery.
The house was actually wider than the breakwater and overhung Portland Harbor for a period of time until additional stone was piled around the tower and house at a later date.

 Portland Breakwater Lighthouse History
The breakwater was extended by almost 200 feet in the early 1870s and a new lighthouse was erected on a granite foundation at the end of the structure.
First lighted in June 1875, the new Portland Breakwater Light, known locally as "Bug Light," was modeled after the Greek Choragic Monument of Lysicrates, built in the fourth century B.C. The design of the cast-iron tower is unique; the cylinder is surrounded by six fluted columns.
The keeper's house at the breakwater was removed and the job of tending the light went to the keeper at Spring Point Ledge.

By 1910, the breakwater was well-serving its intended purpose, however its uninterrupted length was itself creating a problem to vessels masters who were finding it difficult to locate the northern entrance to the harbor in the dark of night.
In 1912, with the final ending point of the breakwater established, the Lighthouse Board requested an appropriation of $25,000 for the construction of a crib at the breakwater's northwestern end, on which it was proposed an acetylene light and fog bell would be installed.
Ashland Breakwater Light stood faithful vigil over the harbor through the halcyon years of the first half of the twentieth century, and in turn stood silent witness to the declining years of the 1950's and 60's.

The construction of the Admiralty Breakwater was originally approved in 1844 to provide an anchorage for the Royal Navy from which the fleet could watch, and if necessary, blockade the French port of Cherbourg.

Briefly, a keepers house was installed on the breakwater but remained empty for a decade, at which time it was sold at auction, relocated and is now a private residence in Burlington.
