NetRhythms: A to Z Album and Gig reviews
This is an enriching crossover bluegrass-with-a-hint-of-country album, refreshing as much for its authenticity and integrity as for its avoidance both of well-worn cliché and auto-pilot technique and with arrangements that are intelligent and detailed yet allow proper space for the individual lines and harmonies to breathe.
Just one more of the album's highlights is Tender Mercies, a mother's prayer inspired by the album's cover image, symbolic of the discrepancy between the unsettling reality of life on earth and the promised land of milk and honey; this very stark contrast provides an effective recurring theme of the album.
For an album that was never meant to exist it's another sterling reinforcement of Gilmore's talent as writer and performer; as Bukowski might have noted there is beauty in the gutter where the view is of the stars.
