  Sacred sites around Glastonbury | Brean Down
Brean Down is not well known as a sacred site, and driving to it can be bizarre, since it involves driving through caravan parks and cheap holiday entertainments.
Brean Down goes back to Megalithic times and before – a worked deer antler was found there, dating back to 10,000 BCE.
Brean Down is reminiscent of many of the Atlantic headlands you see on the west coasts of Ireland, Wales and Scotland, and a fine contrast to the landscape of Somerset.

Brean Down is one of the landmarks of the Somerset coastline - jutting out into the Bristol Channel and providing a download setting between Burnham-On-Sea to the south and Weston-super-Mare to the north.
The first sign of human activity at Brean is a worked giant deer antler dating to about 10,000 BC but it is likely that early hunters visited the Down well before that as man was present in the Mendips almost half a million years ago.
Life on the Down remain unchanged until about AD 340 when a temple (excavated in 1965) was built on top of the eastern knoll, close to a burial mound of the Bronze Age folk.

Work started in 1862 on a 4 acre plot of land at the tip of Brean Down, but took 8 years to complete due to a dispute between the government and the contractors.

Brean Down, which is owned and managed by the National Trust, is about eight miles from the M5, Junction 22.
You can either go back down the steps or follow the path on down, past the brick gun emplacements used to provide training for soldiers in the Second World War (using targets in Weston bay), and the remains of the Iron Age hill–fort built to defend the entrance to the River Axe.
This leads you round to a gentle walk down to a gate at the bottom of the hill, and the path back to the café to enjoy a mug of tea or an ice–cream (or both).

 Brean Down Fort - Definition, explanation
Brean Down Fort was built on Brean Down near Weston-super-Mare, Somerset between 1864 and 1871 on the recommendations of the 1859 Royal Commission.
Originally armed with seven 7" RMLs, it was disarmed in 1901, but rearmed with two 6" ex-naval guns during World War II.

All the way north from Burnham to Brean Down, the six miles of road behind the sand dunes and beaches has a string of bungalows, chalets, shops, caravan parks, amusement parks and holiday camps, as well the odd older building, including Berrow’s medieval church in the dunes.
Brean’s Post Office and Stores is still here, although it is now a Spar shop, and the 1920s Methodist Church beyond is still busy on a Sunday.

Brean Down is a promontory off the coast of North Somerset standing 320 feet high and extending 1½ miles into the Bristol Channel between Weston-super-Mare and Burnham on Sea.
Made of carboniferous limestone, it is a continuation of the Mendip Hills, and two further continuations are the small islands of Steep Holm and Flat Holm.
There are steep cliffs and, at its seaward point, a Brean Down Fort built in 1865 and then re-armed in the Second World War.

It is a relief to reach the archaeologically rich and beautiful headland of Brean Down, a carboniferous limestone outlier of the Mendips reaching 300 feet high, from whose bare grassy slopes are long views to Wales, Glastonbury and along the Somerset coast.
Closer in, you can look down on Weston Bay and Weston-super-Mare to the north: it is probably better not to look too closely at the holiday sprawl along the road back to Burnham-on-Sea.

We bypassed the island of Flatholm and saw Brean Down on the Devon-Somerset coast.
I explored the dark depths of the underground shelters and ammunition lockers, reminding myself that rats could be down in the darkness, and I didn't have a torch.
After a short stop in the barracks it was time to descend the incline path and board the Balmoral down at the beach.

Brean Down today produced just a sprinkling of Meadow Pipits flying south and 2 Chiffchaffs.
Otherwise along the Axe Estuary at Brean there were 3 Short-eared Owls and a Jack Snipe, while a male Black Redstart was at Brean Cove.

Not much survives of WWII interest in Somerset, but there is Brean Down Fort.
Brean Down is a promontory overlooking the Bristol Channel and a fort was constructed there in Victorian times as part of a chain of defences.
Although Brean Down is close to Weston Super Mare, it is separated by a river and flats which can be dangerous, so it has to be approached from either the road from Burnham on Sea or the A370 at Bleadon, a village south of Weston.
