BOSTON (Reuters) - An experimental treatment that mixes high-dose chemotherapy with a stem-cell transplant does little or nothing to improve the survival chances of women with breast cancer once their tumors have spread, according to two studies released on Wednesday.
It took years to evaluate the technique, but studies began to show that women who received conventional lower-dose chemotherapy treatment fared just as well as those who received high doses of the anti-cancer drugs.
In his study of 511 women, half of whom received the experimental treatment, nine died from the treatment and another nine developed leukemia or other bone marrow disorders.
