Topic: The One With the Breast Milk

  Breast Pumps - Breast Milk
If your breast pump does not collect milk in a clean storage container, begin by pouring your milk into a container designed for storing milk in the refrigerator or freezer.
Breast milk that will be frozen should have at least one inch between the milk and the container lid.
Store milk in the main refrigerator or freezer compartment, away from the door, to avoid changes in temperature that may compromise the milk.

  Welcome to TarlaDalal.com
Once you start breast feeding (lactating) for the first day or two, a yellowish translucent fluid called colostrum, is secreted in place of breast milk, that is quite distinct from the breast milk.
Breast milk contains a protein called lactalbumin, and an enzyme called amylase, that aids in digestion and converts the milk into a soft curd that is easily digested by newborns.
A breast fed baby will also have a reduced likelihood of allergic reactions, as the proteins present in the breast milk are less likely to cause allergies.

NRDC: Healthy Milk, Healthy Baby - The Chemicals, One by One
Most of the studies on contaminants in breast milk have focused repeatedly on a small number of chemicals already known to be a problem.
Other chemicals found in breast milk are not pesticides, although dioxins, PCBs, PBDEs and toxic metals share some of the properties of organochlorine pesticides -- accumulating in the environment and concentrating in human bodies and in milk.
One of the things that scientists have learned about the persistent organic pollutant contaminants in breast milk -- chemicals such as dioxins, PCBs, PBDEs and the organochlorine pesticides -- is that the levels in breast milk tend to be higher in first-time mothers and also tend to be higher during the early months of breastfeeding.

EWG Report || Toxic Fire Retardants (PBDEs) in Human Breast Milk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
Milk from two study participants contained the highest levels of fire retardants ever reported in the United States, and milk from several of the mothers in EWG's study had among the highest levels of these chemicals yet detected worldwide.
Breast milk data are very useful, however, because they are an excellent measure of fetal blood levels, and fetal exposure to fire retardants.
Fire retardants in breast milk are one measure of the chemicals that a mother passes on not only to her nursing infant, but more importantly, to the unborn fetus, which is most vulnerable to impacts from neurotoxic chemicals.

Non-Breast Milk In Infancy Increases Asthma Risk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
Children who were fed milk other than breast milk before 4 months of age experienced higher rates of all indicators of asthma and allergy, the report indicates.
Because the introduction of non-breast milk was more closely associated with asthma and atopy than the duration of breastfeeding, the investigators postulate that the exclusion of potentially allergy-causing components in milk other than breast milk may account for the protective effect.
Breast milk is of course the best, but not always possible.

Food for Thought - 6/27/98 - Breast milk doesn't pass cancer virus from Mom to baby
hough several animal studies have suggested that breast cancer might in certain cases be triggered by a virus—perhaps one transmitted in breast milk—this does not appear to hold for people, a new study finds.
For instance, breast cancer risk tends to be low in nations where breast-feeding rates are high, while the malignancy is common in the United States and other Western nations where breast-feeding rates have been low and are waning.
Because a woman’s cumulative lifetime exposure to estrogen is one of the best established risk factors for breast cancer, there is a growing suspicion that exposure to estrogen mimics may also pose a cancer risk.

In this case, the data consistently show that contaminant levels drop steadily as more milk is removed from the breast, but in real-life terms, this recommendation is impractical to the point of being sadistic.
The nipple pain would be intense, the extra pumping would ratchet up her milk supply far beyond the baby’s needs, and the psychology of treating her own milk as toxic waste would be unbearable.
One is that breast milk is most contaminated at the beginning of nursing and becomes less so as lactation continues, with the biggest decrease in the early weeks.
