I played Breath of Fire I and II for the first time last year but I didn't get around to writing flame baits for either of them.
Breath of Fire's battles have always taken place in a three quarters isometric view, with the party on one side of the screen diagonally opposite of their enemies.

There is a bit of a hitch with Breath of Fire III's execution though; the background is laid at such an angel that, combined with stiff character movement, makes walking in a strait line and facing the right direction more of a chore than it should be.

I will now speak as one who fell upon Breath of Fire III as his first RPG ever, back in 1998, and describe why, if nothing else, Breath of Fire III is an excellent introduction to the genre, and in fact, might be one of the best out there for this task.
Breath of Fire III presented these and their functions to me with very user-friendly menus and I was able learn how things worked with no problem.
This is not intended as a "review" of Breath of Fire III, but when I take note of the game objectively and subjectively, I can't really find any huge, glaring flaws, even after years of playing mostly RPGs since I first encountered it.

Breath of Fire III is an RPG and is the sequel to Breath of Fire I and Breath of Fire II, both of which are for the Super NES.
Some new features introduced to this game are a terrain constructed of 3D wire frame (which allows for camera rotation and effects), spells are done in 3D (but the characters are still 2D), and the hunting and fishing feature is greatly improved.

One problem with the text is that it is displayed in small boxes, and so conversations are either limited or require constant button-pushing to scroll through.
