Topic: Breathless bout de souffle

  Breathless
Throughout BREATHLESS Godard incorporates dozens of such classic moments from other films, but he rarely imitates them in a precise point-for-point fashion, nor is he spoofing them (except in his depiction of the two detectives).
BREATHLESS is one of the most briskly paced movies ever made, but it is also one of the most slowly paced movies ever made.
BREATHLESS is a celebration of pop culture, but it is also a celebration of high culture.

 Breathless
Seberg, a troubled expatriate waif who would die by her own hands at the age of 40, brings a fragile wordliness to her role, and the lean handsome Belmondo speaks his dialogue in a quick flat voice that conveys Michel's detachment, and which became a la mode in French cinema.
So despite its energy and youth, Breathless is a dispirited film about a world where happy endings only happen in movies, and where betrayal brings tragedy on a sunny afternoon as busy Paris goes on barely even noti cing.
But Breathless has always been propelled as much by its brooding psychological ene rgy, and also by its thrilling, generous, fl-and-white travelogue of Paris as Michel wanders around the city to his destiny.

Breathless (A Bout De Souffle) (1960) | Reviews | Guardian Unlimited Film
Godard and Truffaut combined their angst and A Bout de Souffle was born.
Knowing that A Bout De Souffle was ahead of its time made the film difficult to watch without some sort of expectations.
A bout de Souffle captures perfectly the post-war zeitgeist in France, indeed much of Western Europe: Not only did Godard take from the past (style and plot from US cop films) but he also looked to the future (Belmondo's desire to escape his present situation).

 Godard: Breathless
Finally, Breathless clearly demonstrates an existential outlook on man’s condition after the death of God and the advent of nihilism, as described by Friedrich Nietzsche.
Although "normal" is not the first word that comes to mind viewing Breathless, and it is now categorized as a French New Wave film, the story line is directly and intensely influenced by American films: Michel, the antihero, is an amoral character and his death at the end of the film is inevitable.
Breathless is an attempt to show life as it is when one has repudiated a false morality and succeeded in living cheerfully without ultimate reason.

The first feature film directed by Jean-Luc Godard and one of the seminal films of the French New Wave, Breathless is story of the love between Michel Poiccard, a small-time hood wanted for killing a cop, and Patricia Franchini, an American who sells the International Herald Tribune along the boulevards of Paris.
Breathless uses the famous techniques of the French New Wave: location shooting, improvised dialogue, and a loose narrative form.
When Breathless was first released, audiences and critics responded to the burst of energy it gave the French cinema; it won numerous international awards and became an unexpected box-office sensation.

Before Breathless, most pictures were just filmed scripts — Godard wanted instead to make his film represent his view of the world: jagged, fresh, unorthodox, unpredictable.
Breathless is, if nothing else, a celebration of cinema itself — its history as well as its potential future.
Ultimately what’s great about Breathless is the fact that it works just as well for the audience in search of a sexy, romantic thriller as it does for those in search of cinematic innovation and philosophical enquiry.

The Magic of the Movies--Breathless (À bout de souffle)
The title of this film, À bout de souffle, is translated from the French as Breathless, but it seems to translate better as "Out of Breath" or "An End of Breath." These have very different connotations from just Breathless, which conjures TV thrillers or cheap romance novels.
There are not as many jump cuts as in À bout de souffle, but then some of the experiments of the New Wave had to fail after their initial novelty wore off.
What this reveals about À bout de souffle is that its lessons have not quite been digested by the movie world when Tarantino can make such a big splash by putting his own spin on them and presenting them again as innovative.

 Reviews - Breathless
The 'Breathless' we are dealing with here is not the appalling 1983 crime against humanity with Richard Gere, but possibly one of the most influential movies ever made.
Giving the film it's proper French title, 'A Bout De Souffle', this 1959 classic was Jean Luc Godard's first feature and launched Godard and the French New Wave ('La Nouvelle Vague') into a wonderful era of creativity, discovery and critical acclaim.
As Godard's homage to American gangster movies, 'Breathless' is cooler than cool, visually upbeat and fast moving, sometimes disorientating with it's shakey hand-held camera tracking, sweeping, panning shots and it's frantic incision into the hustle and bustle of Paris street life.

A Bout de Souffle, shot with bits and scraps of film on a very low budget, was the first official manifestation of the nouvelle vague, a style of cinema that emerged in France, in the period and was heavily inspired by what was being done in America.
Godard threw away the rigidity of French conventions by using hand-held camera techniques and natural settings, giving his film a fluidity and a spontaneity in keeping with the life and character of his protagonist.

It is difficult to define the appeal of A Bout de Souffle.
It is no wonder that Godard is often accused of misogyny, and that his contribution to François Truffaut's scenario was largely centred on this character.
Its original title, loosely translated as Breathless for international release, may also be read as 'out of breath', which has much less romantic connotations, and more accurately captures the sense of exhaustion that must eventually overwhelm its characters and its world.

Despite this indebtedness, which does a great job of establishing the film as an examination of a prevailing attitude of its time, as opposed to a simple character study (in retrospect, it almost feels like a Parisian version of Woody Allen’s Manhattan), the film is distinctly and uniquely Godard’s.

Breathless was based on an idea by Truffaut, had Chabrol as supervising producer, one of the Nouvelle Vague's two great cinematographers, Raoul Coutard, contriving its monochrome images.
The film begins in Marseilles where its antihero, Michel (Jean-Paul Belmondo), a narcissistic, misogynistic criminal, steals the first of several cars and kills a traffic cop on his way to Paris.
