  Uniting of Scots & Picts - 843
This event, no doubt, hastened the downfall of the Pictish monarchy; and as the Picts were unable to resist the arms of Kenneth, the Scottish king, he carried into execution, in the year 843, a project he had long entertained, of uniting the Scots and Picts, and placing both crowns on his head.
The Picts were recognised as a distict people even in the tenth century, but before the twelfth they lost their characteristic nominal distinction by being amalgamated with the Scots, their conquerors.
The Picts certainly appear to have suffered severe defeat, but the likelihood is that after Kenneth succeeded to the throne, a gradual fusion of the two people took place, so that in course of time they became essentially one speaking language, oveying the same laws, and following the same manners and customs.

Later the Norsemen overran the Islands, and then the Scots as well, so that today, the inhabitants are a combination of the native breeds of each of these peoples, the most influencial of which is the Collie crosses introduced by the Scots in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
It is important to note that Shelties are NOT merely a deriviative of small collies bred to small collies to get a miniature collie -- they only "resemble" a miniature collie, and credit must also be given to the other breeds that are part of their ancestry.

It was not so, however, in the union affected between the Scots and the Picts on the battlefield on the Tay.

his kindred, if not remote lineal descendants; and that the confederacy between the Picts and the Scots, of which we hear so much in the history text-books, was a confederacy in which the Scots were the rulers and leaders in battle, and the Picts the subjects whom they had civilized, more or less.
This now brings us face to face with the much-vexed and hitherto unsolved question "Who were the Picts?" This question, however, can be better tackled after we have examined through our new lights the traces of the prehistoric aborigines whom Part-olon found in occupation of Ireland, which was also a Land of the Picts.
