Brede is a small village on the A28 midway between Hastings and Tenterden it is usually tied in with Broad Oak Brede, as it is in the parish of Brede.
In 1030 the Manor of Brede was granted to the Abbey of Fecamp in Normandy, and until 1416, Brede was controlled by the Abbey.
Brede was famous for its iron works, and manufactured cannon and shot until the late 1770's, when gunpowder was manufactured.

The scene of this event was said to be between Brede Place and the Church and the area is now known as Groaning Bridge.
Brede Place dates from the 14tyh century and is often referred to locally as the Giant's House and was the home for a while of the writer Stephen Crane who wrote 'The Red Badge of Courage'.

But in the 1900s much reliance was given to steam power to lift water from deep wells into treatment works and then to pump clean water to local reservoirs built in high ground for distribution by gravity to homes and businesses.

The site is open and the engines operated on compressed air usually on the first Saturday of the month but they do seem to open on Bank Holiday Mondays also.
One engine was scrapped in 1969 but number two engine survives and is now immaculately restored by the Brede Steam Engine Society and operated on compressed air.

IN THIS HOUSE OF BREDE is based on the novel written by that most talented author, Rumer Godden.
In This House of Brede is a literary gem, and I couldn't wait to see this film, especially since I am a fan of Diana Rigg's...but the film disappoints, and mightily.
That said, I believe the film was partly on location at Stanbrook Abbey, (Brede is based on Stanbrook and on St. Cecilia's Abbey in Ryde, Isle of Wight) and the interiors are terrific.
