The course of the river from Pietermaritzburg to Durban is not entirely canoeable, which means that parts of the race are run on the bank, avoiding various gorges, waterfalls and meanders.
A low river is usually compensated for by warmer weather, and it simply becomes a case of hanging in there form several hours a day and tolerating th e blisters and sore bum.
The Breede is predominantly a K2 race, and is often used as the venue for the SA K2 Championships.
