After Cape Town and Stellenbosch, Swellendam was the third settlement to be founded by the Dutch East India Company.
On 12th November 1743 the Council of Policy nominated separate members for the country court of the Lower Breede River, and on 31st August 1745 a new district was proclaimed.
The town occupies a scenically superb situation in the Breede Valley at the foot of the Langeberg range where the four conspicuous peaks known as 10 o'clock, 11 o'clock, 12 o'clock and 1 o'clock form natural sundials by which early farmers told the time.

 Notes on Cape Town & Western Cape - Travelogue
The southernmost point of Africa, Cape Agulhas, is rather boring and not worth a visit unless you have time to spare.
There is also a caravan and chalet park run by the municipality with about a dozen chalets built in Cape Dutch style with thatched roofs, and all set in amongst oak trees (around R115 for a chalet sleeping 4).
Carrying on north past the caves, the road goes over the Swartberg Pass, which is one of the most spectacular mountain passes in the Western Cape, but note that it is a dirt road.
