The Breeders - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Breeders are an American rock band, formed in 1988 as a side project for Kim Deal of Pixies and Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses.
The Breeders were also recruited, in early 2002, to perform in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The Breeders remain a pivotal force in the alternative rock women movement and are revered by their peers.

In fact, though deeply sincere, the Breeders sound quite content and comfortable in their new setting casting an air of cynicism or mellowness in their knowledge that this is not merely a last splash followup for everyone who loved cannonball.
While the Breeders previous work is great in its own right, this album really proves that they are a devoted band and not merely a one trick pony that is related to the Pixies, such as other popular band offshoots (ie The Foo Fighters).
The Breeders were founded in 1989 by Tanya Donelly (from Throwing Muses) and Kim Deal (from the Pixies) as a side project, since both of these fine singers and writers were getting insufficient exposure in the bands they were in.

The Breeders - Biography - AOL Music
One of alternative rock's most promising -- and frustrating -- bands, the Breeders were conceived initially as a way for Pixies bassist Kim Deal and Throwing Muses guitarist Tanya Donelly to let out some suppressed creative energy and to take a break from being the second bananas in each of their main bands.
Though the Breeders' break was supposed to be temporary, it ended up lasting far longer than the band or its fans could have expected.
The Breeders began a flurry of activity in 2002, beginning with a club tour that winter and the release of the Off You and Huffer singles and their long-awaited third album, Title TK, that spring.

As the Breeders were working on their new album in the beginning of 1993, the Pixies split, leaving Kim Deal able to pursue the Breeders full-time.
With the sonic collage of "Cannonball," the Breeders had a crossover hit that catapulted the group into stardom; within a year, the album had gone platinum and the band had a prime spot on 1994's Lollapalooza tour.
By that year, however, Kim reclaimed the Breeders name and played some California dates with the band, which was basically the Amps' lineup with the addition of violinist Carrie Bradley (who played on Pod).

The breeders are, therefore, more determined to have nothing bad revealed about any of their dogs, further establishing in their minds the perfection of the dogs they breed and further increasing the financial and emotional investment that they have in perpetuating this theory.
Ask any knowledgeable breeder whose breed has rampant heart, blood disorder, eye or hip problems whether they blame the lack of foresight and the refusal of past breeders in making a further financial investment in the breed for the almost insurmountable problems now and the answer is predictable.
Breeders may claim that their dogs have never limped or that there is no need to do any testing because the breed is healthy.

The Breeders: Pod ---Ink Blot Magazine
Pixies' bassist Kim Deal and Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses formed the Breeders as a creative outlet, and soon their hobby band became an influence on indie rockers everywhere.
The delivery is so graceful that their performance seems effortless, giving you the feeling that if you and four of your friends got guitars for Christmas, you could head out to practice in the garage and be on MTV in no time.
The Breeders are able to give everything all at once, probably because they came together to have fun and make great music, and they've never lost sight of that vision.

In 2002, Kelley joined the band (reportedly after Kim spent two weeks teaching her to play bass) and The Breeders recorded their Safari EP, after which Walford bowed out (and was replaced by Jim MacPherson) and Donelly left to start Belly.
In 1993 the reconstituted Breeders issued the legendary Last Splash, a frenetic and alchemical mishmash of criminally catchy guitar-pop hooks and totally bizarre ideas which quickly became one of the defining recordings of the '90s (partly on the strength of its memorable singles, "Cannonball" and "Divine Hammer").

Both in the Pixies and the Breeders, she redefined for me the ideal of women in rock, putting dignity into a role that has--both before and since--had very little to recommend it.
THE BREEDERS have just resurfaced as a five-piece outfit, consisting of Kim, Jim (Macpherson) and three new players named Nate, Luis and Katie (Katie is the new Kelley, another petite, brown-haired girl from Dayton), which is essentially the live lineup of the Amps.
That Breeders show reminded me of olden times--a good five, six years ago, before the alt-rock explosion of '9293 and the electronica hooha of 1997--when bands like the Breeders were simultaneously more arty and more artless, modest in their commercial expectations and deeply committed to their strange personal visions.

The way the group split — Black announced it to the public before he told his bandmates — just solidified the frontman's reputation as an incredibly talented person who was largely an asshole.
The decision to re-record a previously released song for an album nearly nine years in the making, however, shows both Deal's arrogance in thinking fans would settle for this kind of bullshit, as well as the extreme dearth of quality material the band had to work with.
How, over the span of nearly nine years, The Breeders were able only to come up with one really good song is completely bewildering.

The side projects the four Breeders have played in since the band went on hiatus in 1995 have been as lightweight as most such endeavors -- somewhat surprising considering the group itself began as an offshoot of the Pixies.

As if to suggest continuity between that group and this new Breeders lineup, the band opened with three Amps songs, including the subtly catchy "Pacer." A good third of the show also consisted of Amps material, which didn't do much to captivate a crowd there to hear the advertised act.

The Breeders : Last Splash - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Thanks to good timing and some great singles, the Breeders' second album, Last Splash, turned them into the alternative rock stars that Kim Deal's former band, the Pixies, always seemed on the verge of becoming.
Though instrumentals such as "S.O.S." and "Flipside" showcase the Breeders' chops and some nifty production tricks, they feel like filler; worst of all, Last Splash features an inferior, plodding new version of Safari's soaring "Do You Love Me Now" that emphasizes the album's unevenness.
One of the definitive alternative rock albums of the '90s, Last Splash is equally inspired and infuriating; that it was the Breeders' last album of that decade makes it even more frustrating.
