No Puppy Mills Canada - What is a Puppy Mill?
Back yard breeders usually do not have bad intentions, but the results of back yard breeding are devastating.
Sometimes back yard breeders will breed so "their children can experience the miracle of birth", or they mistakenly believe "every dog should have one litter." They may think their dog is so cute, he/she would make wonderful puppies, with little or no thought for the homes to which their puppies will go.
Back yard breeders are not necessarily bad people, they often come from middle to upper income families, and their dogs can be well loved and kept.

Line breeding is when the sire and the dam are distantly related: grandsire to granddaughter, granddam to grandson, second cousins, half cousins, uncle to niece, aunt to nephew.
Breeding two dogs that visibly look or are (phenotypically) similar but (genotypically), the genes that the dog carries that you can not see visibly and are unrelated, bred together would not necessarily reproduce these visible traits.
For example, breeding and exhibition of utility breeds such as gundogs, hunting dogs and sleddogs merely for sale as pets and for dog shows, with no effort made to maintain and advance their working capabilities, is an obvious abuse which must lead inevitably to mental and physical degeneracy in those breeds.

The analogy to human breeding only holds if you presume that in both the breeding of people and of dogs there is never any measurment for selection of which related partners will be producing offspring and only proximity will be the rule for making the choice.
Each breeding musts be done seeing the sire and dam as crowded in by their respective families when it comes to flaws, but standing alone when it comes to what virtues they can even potentially offer.
Breeding "paper" instead of dogs has a consistently poor result, but breeding dogs who cannot reproduce themselves should be recognized as a poor practice as well.

Breedings should not be planned solely on the basis of the pedigree or appearance alone.
