  Overview of austral migration
Austral migrants are birds which breed in the temperate latitudes of South America and move northwards towards the Amazon basin for the austral winter.
When breeding and wintering distributions of austral migrants are looked at, a strong latitudinal gradient on the breeding grounds for a tendency to migrate is evident in temperate South America.
He found that austral migrant passerines basically divide into two groups in the winter: one in warm humid areas with daily mean temperatures over 20 degrees Celcius, and another with winter ranges in an area with daily mean temperatures of less than 20 degrees Celcius.

Winter Surveys of Birds in Cuba
Details of the breeding biology of many resident species remain unknown and quantitative data on the distribution and abundance of migrant species are scarce.
Migrants pose complex conservation problems since their populations can be impacted on their breeding grounds, wintering grounds, and during migration.
The fact that we observed strong regional differences in abundance of residents and migrants is important for conservation planning since it suggests that extrapolation of data from one area to another is risky, especially on large islands.

Although a fairly common migrant and local breeder in Seattle, this woodland species is surprisingly seldom seen on the fill.

 NPWRC :: Migration of Birds
By departing in the spring from their wintering ranges to breeding areas, migrant species are probably assured of reduced interspecific competition for adequate space and resources such as ample food for themselves and their offspring.
For most migrants, especially long-distance migrants, the evolution of migratory behavior demands a physiological response to environmental cues in preparation for migration that are different from the environmental factors that ultimately determine their reproductive success on the breeding range or survival on the wintering range.
But the higher the latitude the shorter the breeding season, so that while summer days may be long, the summer season is short and migrants in more northerly climes may have only one chance to breed before they must again travel southward.

I studied the structure of European breeding forest bird communities on several spatial scales focusing on heterospecific attraction among birds (i.e., the attraction of individuals to the company of interspecifics).
Heterospecific attraction during breeding in relation to predation risk was assessed by examining the spatial distribution of birds.
To conclude, heterospecific attraction of migrants to resident birds contributes to the structure of local avian communities in forest landscapes.

 Threats to Neotropical migrants
To understand their population dynamics, one must consider their requirements and habits on their breeding grounds in North America, their wintering areas in Latin America, and during migration to and from these points.
During a 1995 symposium on Neotropical migrant birds held at the Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference in Detroit, Scott Robinson of the Illinois Natural History Survey summarized the threats facing Neotropical migrant birds breeding in the Midwest.
Breeding areas can act as population "sources" (where reproductive success creates a surplus of individuals that emigrate to other areas), or "sinks" (where the rate of reproduction does even reach replacement level).

Although more well known for its migrant birds, Scilly's population of resident bird should not be overlooked.

The annual presence of rare migrant passerines and waders in autumn, including some North American species, suggest Scilly is important to migrant birds generally, whereas in reality the islands are too far west to be used by most birds travelling from or through Britain.

Our quarterly journal of ornithology, The Migrant, was first published in June 1930 to "record and encourage the study of birds in Tennessee." It is on file in many libraries, museums, and educational institutions throughout the world.
That effort established a record of the distribution and relative abundance of the breeding bird species in Tennessee and is now available as The Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Tennessee.
We have never endeavored to become a large organization, but we do seek members who by reason of their love of birds and nature, or through their scientific inclinations, can be expected to sustain these interests through TOS.
