Just before 1997 came to a close, a very sad thing happened to all of us who care about architecture and cities, and that was the death of Brendan Gill.
Brendan was a fiery Irishman with a wonderful wit who worked at the New Yorker for 61 years.
Since everything ends badly for us, in the inescapable catastrophe of death, it seems obvious that the first rule of life is to have a good time, and that the second rule of life is to hurt as few people as possible in the course of doing so.

Gill declares that "in the old Ross-Shawn days, what hadn't happened at the magazine was more worthy of note than what had." In reality, of course, a great deal was happening, and Gill seems to have heard and remembered it all.

Although a satisfying read, mainly because Gill has an ability to put us into the time and place of the situations, the book does not give us the depth that Wright's life deserves.
A life of masks, or facades, is a fitting device to create a story, but not a device suitable for the life of the "greatest American architect".
