Named after former Labour Party leader Brendan Corish, Brendan Howlin was born in Wexford.
Howlin was successful on his second attempt when he was elected as a Labour Party TD, taking in 1987.
Howlin was immediately appointed Labour Party Chief Whip, a position he held until 1993.

Brendan Howlin hails from W xford, a constituency that sent another leader of the Labour party, Brendan Corish, and Dail Eireann.
The fact that he is seven years older than Brendan Howlin should be in his favour as the latter could again live to fight another day, while Rabbitte might not be young enough to do just that.

After being passed in the Seanad in December, the Amendment Bill was discussed on a number of occasions in the Dáil, with a number of TDs speaking out against the Bill for its failure to address the issue of predatory pricing.

Brendan Howlin says it is extraordinary that Gardai intend to trawl through his phone and fax records in an attempt to identify the source of this information, as it contradicts the legal privilege of expression which Oireachtas members possess.

An impartial analysis demonstrates (though I don't claim to be impartial) that it was not going into government with Fianna Fáil that tainted Labour, it was the decision to collapse the government that hurt Labour.

 where's me country?: An Interesting Case of Dail privilege
Mr Howlin and his party leader are talking big talk about the state of our democracy and trust in our TDs following the Supreme Court ruling which forced Deputy Howlin to reveal his sources to the Morris Tribunal, those sources that talked of the inital Garda Corruption which exploded in recent years.
The Irish Times reports that Howlin expects the identity to emerge soon, since his telephone records can now be handed over to the tribunal.
Presumably Howlin can't do the decent thing and stand in contempt if what are sought are phone records the release of which is not his to control once the court order has been made.

Labour justice spokesman Brendan Howlin said his party had argued consistently for a short Bill to close off the specific loophole in the law identified by the Supreme Court while leaving broader issues, such as the age of consent, to a later date.
He said that among the principal concerns were that the Bill would criminalise both parties to a sexual act if both are underage.
He added that the Bill treated with the same degree of seriousness sexual activity between young persons of the same age as it does such activity when engaged in by a much older person with a much younger one.
