In 1977, Perry was a leading member of New Zealand punk rock band The Scavengers, working under the pseudonym of Ronnie Recent.

 The born of a myth
Brendan Perry lives on an island in a river on the border between Eire and Northern Ireland; Lisa Gerrard lives in the Snow River mountains in Australia.
Perry suggests that Dead Can Dance music tends to mirror the music that the pair are listening to, or have been researching he in his converted church in Ireland (where Spiritchaser was written and recorded), and Lisa in the remote Gippsland region of Southern Australia.
Perry: "With this record, I was conscious of the fact that we were delving into areas that we had worked in before, so we made a conscious decision to move away from that.

Brendan's impressive voice is as powerful as ever, but unfortunately, the songs do not carry the innovative and catchy sounds of Dead Can Dance.
Brendan left all the exotic musical instruments behind and attacked this record with nothing but a guitar and his sonorous vocal chords.
Perry croons his trance inducing melodies without breaking form or function, resulting in a collection of songs that should not be heard while operating heavy machinery.

Brendan explains: "These groups were made up largely of people who had no background or formal training in music but who were prepared to play instruments in an experimental and somewhat unconventional fashion." Brendan's involvement in this movement led to a meeting that was significant in shaping his subsequent musical direction.
Brendan's reasons for developing Quivvy were a combination of the creative and financial: "I was horrified by the amount of money that record companies paid out to studios to record their artists — who, in turn, would see no profits until they had at least paid back the recording debt through record sales.
Brendan's material is usually derived in the first instance from improvisations on various instruments, ranging from stringed (guitars, oud, bouzouki, tampura, hurdy-gurdy) to percussion (congas, djembe, dumbek, drum kit, bodhran) to keys (samplers and synthesizers).

Perry's vocal efforts are no less compelling, his own high point occurring with the vast-sounding 'Enigma of the Absolute,' as a steady, massive drum pound echoes behind a similarly treated guitar/harpsichord combination, tinged with a striking string arrangement.
On Severance, Brendan Perry complements Lisa's introduction to the LP with lyrics emoting feelings of oppression and anguish, reflecting the deep impression left on this self-indulgent group by the macabre poetry of Baudelaire.

Their pioneering experiments mixing eastern and western classical music with gothic moods was one of the highlights of the 4AD label over the past 15 years.
As one half of the creative partnership that was at the center of DCD, rumors of a solo album from Brendan Perry were one of the few things fans held on to while mourning the loss of the band.
Perry's lyrics are one of the most intriguing aspects of this project.

The Brendan Perry solo album that marks the end of Dead Can Dance, Eye Of The Hunter (4AD, 1999), is an intensely personal statement arranged for (synthesized) orchestra and a plethora of acoustic instruments.
Perry is not gifted with the cunning introspection of modern songwriters such as Smog or Magnetic Fields, or even Mark Lanegan, but he successfully compensates his old-fashioned style by enveloping the personal into the epic.

Brendan Perry : Eye of the Hunter - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Brendan Perry's solo debut, Eye of the Hunter, builds on his reputation as Dead Can Dance's meditative, baritone singer/songwriter.
Perry's rich vocals and the songs' orchestral-folk arrangements and somber titles give the album an intriguing Gothic/easy listening feel, similar to Scott Walker's darkest Baroque pop.
Along with seven original tracks like "Medusa," "Saturday's Child," and "Archangel," Eye of the Hunter also includes a thoughtful cover of Tim Buckley's "I Must Have Been Blind." Though the stately pace of the songs becomes monotonous at times, Perry's first solo effort is a mature work worthy of his reputation.
