The Torfajokull central volcano is an active volcanic system, but is now in a declining fumarolic stage as exemplified by numerous fumaroles and hot springs.
The hot pools at Landmannalaugar are but one of many manifestations of geothermal activity in the area, which also tends to alter the minerals in the rocks, causing the beautiful colour variations from red and yellow to blue and green, a good example being Brennisteinsalda.
To the north of the Torfajokull region sub-glacial volcanic activity produced the hyaloclastites (moberg) mountains, such as Lodmundur and Mogilshofdar.

The language is descriptive; you can usually figure out from the name what it ought to be -- Brennistein "brown stone" or sulfur-tinted stone (sulfur has its own name, I think).
Hot steam came out of the ground in many places as we are close to the Mid-Atlantic Rift zone with intense volcanism.
From Brennisteinsalda we traveled southward across relatively flat ground, cut by little rivers, some of which had snowpacks, others steaming hot water, some had it all.

Our route out of Landmannalaugar took us around the volcanic cone of Hekla.

Just a short break of 20 minutes before we start our hike, however, and we bypass the natural hot springs at the foot of the trail (something we probably regret later).

In the proximity of Landmannalaugar rhyolitic rock is dominant and the colours of the landscape are simply unbelievable.
Mt Brennisteinsalda as well, but also during the latest warm epoch and the rhyolitic crater in its slopes around the year 1480 as well as the lava field to the south of Lake Frostastadavatn.
The volcanic activity during Holocene was mainly concentrated in the western part of the Torfajokull Area between Mt Laufafell in the south and the craters Stutur and Ljotipollur in the north.

 Trek Iceland 2006
From Landmannalaugar we move on over the Hrafntinnusker plateau at 800m.
Walking up between the bizarre, seemingly unnatural rock structures of the Brennisteinsalda lava flow, we come across areas of geothermal activity in the form of steaming vents and hot springs.
The smell of sulphur is strong in the air, and the rock is richly coloured with mineral deposits brought up from the depths of the earth.

Next time I will again go to Landmannalaugar but would wait there for nice weather and not start walking immediately.
There are enough small trips in the area and with sunshine the Brennisteinsalda and other colorful mountains should be a dream.
With nice weather I would also like to make the trip to Hrafntinnusker again and see the Obsidian field again.

On the first day we arrived at lunchtime in Landmannalaugar and started walking despite a light drizzle.
The way goes along the Brennisteinsalda, a colorful mountain with hot springs and steaming holes.
Unfortunately the view was a bit compromised by the weather.

We also passed by Brennisteinsalda, a rainbow streaked mountain with geothermal activity of steaming vents.
The afternoon walk took us again into the lava fields but in the opposite direction.

Bus every day both form Reykjavik and Skaftafell.
The usual path that goes trough Laugahraun, east of Brennisteinsalda to Stórihver and from Stórihver to Hrafntinnusker (hut 27 V 590135 UTM 7090762) Distance is about 10 km.
The other path that goes over Reykjakollur and Skalli.
