The London Borough of Brent is a London borough in north west London which is surrounded by other boroughs: Harrow to the northwest, Barnet to the northeast, Camden to the east and Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster to the south.
Brent was formed in 1965 from the Boroughs of Wembley and Willesden in London.
According to the 2001 census, the Borough of Brent has the country's highest percentage of people born outside of the UK (46.53%).

Between now and 8 March when the council sets its budget for the year the demand has to be for the councillors to refuse to pass on the government’s cuts – and if the council officers or a commissioner step in to do so, then the councillors should lead the fight against the cuts.

 Racial equality success for Brent Council
Brent Council has agreed that it no longer needs to be monitored by the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE), thanks to significant progress on race equality.
A voluntary agreement with the CRE was made in 2000 in response to the high number of employment tribunal cases that were lodged on the grounds of racial discrimination in the 1990s.
The council has since overhauled many of its practices and procedures on this front and the position has been completely reversed, with the number of race claims falling steadily year on year.

Leadership in Brent social services department prior to the Victoria Climbié tragedy was "seriously defective", the council's chief executive has told the inquiry into her death.
Brent council leader Naan John told the inquiry that the council's social work department was in a "sorry state of affairs" during the period in question.
Ms John, who was deputy leader of Brent council in 1999 when Victoria came into its care, said she was aware of "serious concerns" about performance triggered by tight budgets, staff shortages and lack of leadership.

The council's informal consultation period was initially for one month, from the 12th of March to 12th April 2001.
I have considered all the information and I am satisfied that the council properly carried out that statutory consultation on the proposed closure Willesden high-school, and that there were plenty of opportunities for interested parties to make their views known.

Although it did not win, an initiative that Brent is involved in, called Locata, did win one of the coveted awards, and demonstrates the benefits for citizens of meaningful co-operation between localities.

The rule for the Brent Spar was that every person who attended the dialogue workshops needed to have a “constituency” which they represtented, and must report back to then, and feed back any constituency thoughts into the dialogue process.
The Environment Council managed the whole process and had many “planning meetings” with Shell to make sure everyone was up to date, and that the material going out was in English (not engineering speak) etc.
This was a highly political issue at the time, and The Environment Council co-ordinator and facilitator acted as “honest brokers” at times with parties who had difficulty contributing to, understanding and/or trusting the process.
