Brent East (UK Parliament constituency) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Liberal Democrat MP, Sarah Teather, in a September 2003 by-election on a 29% swing from Labour to the Lib Dems.
Because it was won by Labour at the previous General Election it is considered as a Labour seat for gain / loss purposes and is therefore a target seat for the LibDems.

Shahid Malik - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brent East after the 2003 by-election but was controversially left off the shortlist, despite winning more branch nominations than anyone else.
It was also suggested that Malik had overstated his opposition to the war in Iraq in an attempt to be selected in Brent East.
Insults were traded that the selection had been 'stitched-up' for Robert Evans, the by-election candidate, and that Malik is a carpet-bagger, touting himself around any constituency and saying anything in the hope of getting a Labour seat (although he had stood for fewer than many sitting MPs)

 Brent By-election
At the last moment solicitors for the Royal Mail told election agent Shane O'Curry that the communication was unacceptable because the text was not 'directly relevant' to the Brent East by-election.

spiked-politics Article Brent out of shape
Indeed, the fact that Brent East was Labour's first by-election loss in 15 years, despite their having been in power for seven years, indicates the sea change that has taken place in British politics, where New Labour dominates the political landscape.
Much has been made of Brent East's Muslim community using the by-election as a means of giving Blair a bloody nose for his war in Iraq, and no doubt there is some truth to that.
As one Brent East voter put it, 'She is not like the rest of them; you cannot trust the others'.

She said her victory in the former Labour stronghold last week was borne out of the public’s loss of trust in Mr Blair.

 Blairista!
With the Brent East by-election today The Guardian runs an opinion piece from London Mayor Ken Livingstone on how disreputable the Lib Dems really are.
Some of the people on the ground in Brent East have sought to reassure me that things are not as bad as has been reported, though one party official did remark that they were convinced that David Blunkett must a Lib Dem mole to have said what he said yesterday.
There are plenty within the party who suffer from the persecution complex derived from 18 years in the wilderness, but the fact remains that Labour's first by-election defeat under this Government happened not because of the handling of the economy or perceptions that Labour is soft on crime etc, but merely own goals.

News archive for Ballotlaw - Online electoral legislation for the UK
Having received the Commission’s report, Christopher Leslie, Minister at the Department for Constitutional Affairs, confirmed in the House of Commons on 16th December 2003 that the East Midlands and the North East would be two of the regions for pilot schemes and that a third region would also be selected, having considered the Commission’s recommendations.
The report was submitted to the relevant Ministers on 8th December 2003, and recommended that e-voting should not be considered for use in the June 2004 elections, as no region was ready for such an innovation in voting.
Knight petitioned that the election should be invalidated in accordance with section 48 of the Representation of the People Act 1983 (c.2), as the Returning Officer had failed to “issue to” the relevant voters the materials necessary for their vote to be recorded in time.

UK Indymedia Labour has lost their ‘Safe Seat’ in the Brent East
The Liberal Democrats staged a sensational by-election victory early today when they came from third place to win the Brent East byelection with a 29% swing that will shake Tony Blair's confidence on the eve of Labour's Bournemouth conference.
It brings his parliamentary party at Westminster up to 54 MPs, the largest number since the 1920s and, at least for the moment, gives weight to his team's claim that the Conservatives are failing to capitalise on Labour's discomforts and should "step aside and let the Liberal Democrats take on this government".
But the leader's name was barely mentioned in campaign literature and muttering critics will say the result points to fresh Tory setbacks in the European, local and London mayoral elections next spring.

Disillusioned Labour voters in the Brent East by-election went to the polls to deliver their verdict on the war on Iraq, government trustworthiness and, most pointedly, Tony Blair's leadership.
"The Liberal Democrats have won the Brent East by-election with a majority of just over 1,100 votes.
Islington councillor Sarah Teather gained 8,158 votes to beat London MEP Robert Evans (7,040), her victory marking the first time Labour has lost a Commons seat in a by-election for 15 years.

 Goodbye Brent East
The Liberal Democrat victory in the Brent East by-election, with an almost 30% swing from Labour, comprehensively seized one of Labour's most safest seats from their hands.
He believes that he can use this to turn future elections to the Tories' advantage, but many of the electorate may be very happy to see the Liberal Democrats move to the left to fill the gap as the Blairite shift to the right continues.
Kennedy, with the Liberal Democrat conference about to start, must have been hopping about, clicking the heals of his shoes together in delight, as a future General Election victory looks to be finally within his grasp.

 23: Brent East
The expectation that Brent East will automatically return a Labour MP at the general election is typical of the arrogance with which the New Labour leadership treats traditional Labour voters.
Brent East, one of the most ethnically mixed constituencies in the country, was hardly fertile territory for the far right.
Because it was a by-election, the Labour Party bureaucracy was also in charge of the selection (with a minimum of input from local party officers), presenting party members with a shortlist of four to choose between.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Washington, D.C.
Robert Brent, a Catholic and nephew of Bishop Carroll, was the first mayor, and was annually reappointed by Presidents Jefferson and Madison until 1812; in 1812 the duty of electing the mayor devolved on the council, and from 1820 to 1871 on the people.
In 1817 the charters of the corporations of Washington and Georgetown were abolished by Act of Congress; for a brief time the District was assimilated to a territorial form of government, with a board of public works as the most important administrative factor.
The first local authorities of Washington were the president, three commissioners appointed by him, and the Levy Court; the city was incorporated in 1802, with a city council elected by the people, and a mayor appointed by the president.

The Brent East seat was previously held by Paul Daisley (Labour) with a majority of 13,047 who died aged 45 of cancer in June 2003.
The Liberal Democrats' victory in Brent East was hailed yesterday by the party's strategy chief as the result of "an excellent campaign, an excellent candidate and above all a sign that the tide has turned against Blair and New Labour".
Many voters saw the by-election as an opportunity to deliver a message of no confidence in Tony Blair, they said, and it was fought by many as a referendum on the performance of the government.
