Sutter, who will serve as a head coach in the NHL for the first time, is the 14th person in that position in franchise history.
Sutter gained a reputation as an abrasive forward and leader in his 19 NHL seasons with the Islanders and Chicago Blackhawks.
Sutter's son, Brandon, was recently selected in the first round of the NHL entry draft by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Brent Colin Sutter (born 10 June 1962 in Viking, Alberta, Canada) is a retired National Hockey League (NHL) player and current owner, president, general manager and head coach of the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League (WHL).
He is the third youngest of seven Sutter brothers, six of whom made the NHL (Brent, Brian, Darryl, Duane, Rich and Ron).
Brent was the head coach of two Canadian Juniors ice hockey teams which won the Gold Medal at both the 2005 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and 2006 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
