THE MASSIVE Brent oilfield 120 miles north-east of Shetland could be closed down or sold off under plans now being considered by oil giant Shell.
The Brent field, which came into production in 1976 and was once the most productive in the North Sea, currently produces 13,000 barrels of oil a day down from a peak of 380,000 barrels in 1986.
While the Brent pipeline was primarily built to bring Brent crude to Sullom Voe oil terminal most of the oil using the pipeline now comes from the Alwyn, Cormorant, Otter, Penguin and Tern fields.
