Brest (Belarusian: Брэст - Brest; Russian: Брест - Brest; Polish: Brześć; also known as Bieraście or Biareście (Belarusian: Бе́расьце and Бярэ́сьце respectfully) formerly Brest-on-the-Bug and Brest-Litovsk is a city (population 290,000 in 2004) in Belarus close to the Polish border where the Western Bug and Mukhavets Rivers meet.
In March 1918, in the Brest-Litovsk fortress on the western outskirts of Brest at the confluence of the Western Bug and Mukhavets Rivers, the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed, ending the war between Russia and the Central Powers and transferring the city and its surrounding region to the sphere of influence of the German Empire.
According to the agreements of the Yalta Conference of February 1945, Brest's status as part of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic was officially recognised.

In the partition of Poland in 1793, Brest was annexed to the Russian Tsarist Empire as a regional city; at first it was in the Slonim district, and from 1831 it belonged to Grodno Guberniya (province).
In 1837 construction of the Brest Fortress began, and in accordance with the orders of the Tsarist authorities, all the residents were evacuated from their homes, and the old part of the city was destroyed to accommodate the building of the new city.
The importance of the Brest community (kehilla) in the Council of the Lithuanian Nation was expressed, for example,in the bylaws – it was determined that the Brest constitution would serve as the model for the whole nation, and the other leading Jewish communities.

The Fortress of Biarescie (Brest, Brest-Litovsk at the taime) was built in 1830-1842 in place of Biarescie Castle by the plan of Generals Malecki and Operman and Cornel Feldman of Russian Imperial Army.
The Fortress of Brest was a place of a heroic seige during the WWII For more than month soldiers were defending the fortress against Nazi occupation well behind the enemy line advancing towards Moscow.

 Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
Russia recognized the independence of Ukraine and Georgia; confirmed the independence of Finland; gave up Poland, the Baltic states, and part of what is now Belarus to Germany and Austria-Hungary; and ceded Kars, Ardahan, and Batum to the Ottomans.
The general armistice of Nov. 11, 1918, forced Germany to renounce the treaty, and Russia also declared it null and void.
