Francis BretHarte (August 25, 1836–May 6, 1902) was an American author and poet, best remembered for his accounts of pioneering life in (A state in the western United States on the Pacific; the 3rd largest state; known for earthquakes) California.
The spirit of Dickens breathes through the poems and stories of BretHarte just as the spirit of BretHarte breathes through the poems and stories of (English author of novels and poetry who was born in India (1865-1936)) Kipling.
In 1885 he settled in (The capital and largest city of England; located on the Thames in southeastern England; financial and industrial and cultural center) London.

BretHarte was appointed Secretary of the United States Branch Mint at San Francisco.
In 1878 BretHarte was appointed United States Counsul at Crefeld, Germany. Harte was transferred to Glasgow, Scotland in 1880.
BRETHARTE has himself told the story of how while occupied with his secretarial duties at the San Francisco Mint-and his literary work religiously carried on outside mint hours-George Barnes, a brother journalist, introduced him to a young man whose appearance was decidedly interesting.
