Brethil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion, the Forest of Brethil was a cluster of woods bordering Dorthonion, which was probably originally part of Doriath.
It was to Brethil that the House of Haleth removed after dwelling east of the river Gelion.
The main feature of the forest was the hill of Amon Obel, upon which stood Ephel Brandir, the main settlement of the Haladin.

Brethil nodded, moving to embrace her, burying his face in her dress, finding comfort in the sweet unique smell that was his mother's.
Brethil had been very brave, the dear little soul coming to her in the night when he had heard her weeping in despair and holding her in his small arms, silent, yet supportive and loving.
Brethil was barely aware of all the eyes that gazed at him in sympathy as his fingers traced the lines of the face once more.

 Welcome to Brethil (Beleriand MUSH)
Brethil - the name means 'Silver Birch' - is the dwelling place of the Haladin - the Second House of the Edain (Beor and Hador being the other two).
While the more peaceful side of Brethil life was never focused upon by Tolkien, we know that the Haladin are a nature-loving people, and prone to wandering off through their forest at random, for the simple enjoyment of nature.
We know that the folk of Brethil did not care for large crowds (except on occasion, of course) and were content among small numbers of friends and family.

When Níniel was first brought to Brethil, when she saw that view from the bridge, she started shivering uncontrollably - so much so that the name of Dimrost was changed to Nen Girith, the "Shuddering Water".
It was only later that the cause of her foresightful fear was discovered: the Ravines she had seen from the bridge would be the place of her tragic death.

The Melosse lands, while not as large as the holdings of some of the northern noble families, were the most economically important, since they provided much of the grain and almost all of the wool that sustained Rhudaur.
Minas Brethil was a regular resting-place for Angmarean reconnaissance parties for some time (this explains the mysterious lights), however the underground caves were found only recently.
