The Stranger | Seattle | Music | Feature | Achilles' Heel
Frontman Brett Netson (a self-taught guitarist who began playing at age nine and was practicing five hours a day by the age of 16) has an unyielding fondness for soaking his vocals in delay and reverb, which can sound a little goofy at times.
Netson started polarizing his peers in the late '80s playing with a punk band called the Pugs in his hometown of Boise.
Netson's instincts may be his saving grace, but the band's collective dabbling in substances has been their Achilles' heel.

Built to Spill - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Former Treepeople lead Doug Martsch formed Built to Spill in 1992 with Brett Netson and Ralf Youtz as the band's original members.
The sound of fellow indie rockers Modest Mouse and Death Cab for Cutie has been compared to Built to Spill's sound, most often because of all three bands' association with the indie rock movement known as the Northwest sound.
Additionally, Built to Spill is connected with Brett Nelson's band Caustic Resin through the bands' 1997 shared release and some shared members.

 Modern Fix
Never shying away from epic guitar solos and distortion laded feedback jams, Netson is a bit of a rogue within the realm of independent music for his ability to play his own brand of rock on his own terms.
I had a chance to talk with Netson while he was in LA with the ex-Screaming Tress vocalist, prior to the final show of the tour.
Brett Netson: We were both in New York, Caustic Resin was playing and Queens of the Stone Age were playing, and Mark mentioned he might be doing it, and then just called back on a whim.

Brett Netson’s guitar playing and vocals are out of control and psychotic like Syd Barrett on his worst days.
Brett’s relationship with Built to Spill goes far back, as he was an original member and often tours with the band, wizard hat atop his mess of hair, ten-minute guitar solos teetering on the brink of self-implosion.
Brett’s songs take their cues more from Pink Floyd at the peak of their freakouts or Neil Young’s darker moments.

Netson was visible throughout the entire show, setting up equipment and interacting with fans before any of the music began, and later, devoting his free-ranging musical services to Built to Spill's team effort.
With his long, thick hair in a state of disarray and an open Rolling Rock at his feet on the stage floor, he became a one-man band, using the wonder of digital delay to create a loop of gravelly rhythm over which piercing shards of reverbed distortion were laid.
Netson took the stage again for The Delusions' encore, joining them in a lengthy, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink sonic liquidation, complete with dueling, effects-laden solos and feedback-drenched mayhem.

 CMT.com : Caustic Resin : Biography
Most media attention focused on Caustic Resin's relationship with Built to Spill -- Netson was a frequent guest musician, and the two bands once combined for an EP release -- but they proved to be a venerable presence in their own right, sticking around for well over a decade.
Caustic Resin were formed in Boise in 1988, and originally featured guitarist/singer Brett Netson (formerly of local punk outfit the Pugs), bassist Tom Romich Jr., and drummer Pat Perkins.
Following its release, Netson took the band away from the path they'd been treading, moving them away from BtS to the California-based indie Alias (although he continued to appear as a guest guitarist for BtS albums and live shows).

This catchy, pop album brings the Boise band into mainstream radio play with singles like "Car", "In the Morning", and "Big Dipper," pulling in many new fans, and is hailed as one of their best records.
With most songs around the six minute length and containing long guitar solos and rhythm refrains, Built to Spill's first major label release is reminiscent of 1970's acid rock albums, and a major departure from their norm.
With two songs counting in at twenty minutes, one of which is a gorgeous Neil Young cover, as well as containing the poppy single "Car", this album is appealing to every Built to Spill fan.

Martsch rotated his cast, dropping Netson and Youtz in favor of Farm Days buddies Brett (not to be confused with Netson) Nelson on bass and Andy Capps on drums.
Martsch wanted to keep the freshness of working with new people, but his sound wasn't quite as simple as the idiosyncratic guitar pop championed by the lo-fi bands of the day.

"I call (Netson) whenever we're in trouble," Martsch said, referring to how, in the past, he often asked Netson to "save" the band anytime it hit a rough patch in the studio, which wasn't infrequent.
Netson finally joined the band in May, adding a third guitar to the mix.

It was a fair assessment of what Martsch has accomplished over the past five years as the leader and sole permanent member of Built To Spill, and a reasonable reaction to the gorgeously warped guitarscapes of the band's then-new major-label debut, Perfect from Now On (Warner Bros.).
A week ago Thursday at the Middle East he proved it in an hour-plus set with the latest incarnation of Built To Spill -- Spinanes member Scott Plouf on drums, Brett Netson (not Nelson) on bass, and Martsch himself as the lone guitarist/singer.
Although they played only segments of two of the epic tunes from Perfect from Now On -- the last half of "Kicked It in the Sun" and the beginning section of "Untrustable/Part 2" -- the low-key performance was punctuated by impassioned outbursts of Martsch's high-wire soloing, culminating in a wonderfully long and winding 20-minute jam.

Instead, they remained even more firmly underground, where their unorthodox approach enjoyed tremendous support from the indie faithful.Built to Spill were formed in Boise, ID, in 1993, shortly after Martsch had departed the Boise-rooted, Seattle-based Treepeople.
With the help of producer/engineer Phil Ek, who would become the band's regular collaborator, Martsch's fragmentary songwriting aesthetic and detailed arrangements really hit their stride, resulting in a minor gem of quirky indie guitar pop.
The same year, Martsch formed a side project with Beat Happening frontman and K Records honcho Calvin Johnson, and they recorded the first of three albums as the Halo Benders.

The positive response to There’s Nothing Wrong With Love—coupled with the increased exposure of Lollapalooza—helped create a buzz around Built to Spill, and before 1995 was out, Martsch inked a deal with Warner Brothers that promised a good amount of creative control.
In early 1996, K Records issued a compilation of rarities and outtakes, The Normal Years, that spanned 1993-1995 and featured work by most of the band’s lineups.
Finally released in 1997, Perfect From Now On was a set of longer, moodier songs that once again earned positive reviews, and substantially expanded the band’s growing fan base.
