Brett was from a poor family, but he wasn't raised in an alcoholic family like the rest of Rancid's members.
Brett Reed is probably the underrated member of Rancid and least seen.

Reed treats Edgar Allan Poe as the biographer of the Civil War and deals with slavery as an ongoing cultural phenomenon, tracing its symptoms in the ways in which fl identity is represented in contemporary American culture.

Rancid inlcudes four members Tim Armstrong on guitar and vocals, with Matt Freeman as backing vocalist and bassist, and Brett Reed as drummer.
Freeman is also bassist and lead vocalist in the psychobilly band, Devil's Brigade, in which Tim Armstrong and Brett Reed also play.
In February 2005, it was announced by Lars Frederiksen on British radio show "The Lock Up" on BBC Radio 1 that Rancid would begin recording again at the end of 2005, with a release scheduled for early 2006.

Brett Reed was perfect for the band, his drumming fit in perfectly, Rancid isn't about drum solos or anything like that.

From Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman's childhood friendship in the working class enclave of Albany, CA (a one-square-mile town bordering Berkeley), to the subsequent additions of Brett Reed and Lars Frederiksen (in 1991 and 1993, respectively), they have depended on one another for friendship, support and even survival for the better part of a decade.
When it came time to recruit a drummer, Tim turned to friend and roommate Brett Reed, with whom he'd been sharing a crash pad over a liquor store on the South Berkeley/North Oakland border.
