PLEXUS/ Wolhee Choe 'The Fall of Icarus and Re-imagining Technology'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Ovid's and Breughel's expressions of the Greek myth share little apparent surface content, although both are made of the same narrative material, each attempting to understand homo faber and each contributing uniquely to our understanding of human beings.
Now we turn to Breughel's "Landscape with the Fall of Icarus." A construct within which an engineer is something of a Nietzschean superman with a Freudian death wish may not be novel to us, but it has certainly been neglected in the past readings of the fall of Icarus.
Breughel divides his canvas diagonally in two; his novel juxtaposition of the day-to-day world in the foreground with the mythical dream world in the background triggers a whole sequence of contrasting dimensions of reality freshly revealed as Breughel's poetic conception of Daedalus.

Vargr Breughel: Vargr Breughel was a dwarf (a human dwarf, born to human parents) and Detlef Sierck's stage manager and assistant director on Drachenfels.
He was implicated in the murders carried out by Lazlo Lowenstein, and took his own life during his interrogation by Henrik Kraly, Oswald von Konigswald's steward.
Detlef campaigned to have Kraly tried for murder due to his part in Breughel's death, but was unsuccessful, mainly due to Breughel's mutations.

 Breughel Fest and Block Party
This Sunday's Breughel Fest is, to the best of my knowledge, the only local festival dedicated to a specific artist.
Breughel's teeming panoramas also hint at the desperation of peasant life.
When festival organizer Michel Notredame, chef and owner of Cuvee Notredame (1701 Green St., 765-2777) and a Belgian, noted a resemblance between Breughel's jolly paintings and American block parties, the Breughel Fest was born.

Breughel collaborated with many artists, including his friend Rubens, who added the human figures to Breughel's depictions of landscapes and animals.

Rather, I'd note that the power and the appeal of the image lies in the archetype it evokes, one that goes back to an extremely famous Breughel painting: Breughel's Icarus.
You've probably seen it — it's the one with the closeup of the ploughman in the foreground and the mythic tragedy unfolding so far in the distance it barely registers.

Peter Jenks has the following thoughts regarding the application of Fry's formalist theory to Breughel's painting:
As promised, I have sent you a version of the Breughel picture, in which I have removed the “fl ring”, plus another one with some additions.
Firstly, from a compositional aspect, an element is gone that had some validity – one can see that there are other “rings” echoed in the painting (I highlighted some of them in the second image (“Breughel 2”), and from a formal perspective, the repetition and echoing adds harmony to a picture.
