Topic: Brevet (cycling)

  Technical and Training
Like other brevets, the 200 Km Brevet is a timed ride: that is, there is a time allowance in which the ride must be finished in order for the ride to receive accreditation.
A brevet rider, therefore, should be equipped with a road map of the area of the ride, some repair tools (including a patch kit for tires), extra clothing for cooler or rainy weather, and food and drink to consume on the bike.
Some brevets have a secret control, a control that is set at a point on the route designated by the ride organiser, to ensure that riders are staying on the route.

Cycling is a recreation, a sport, and a means of transport across land.
Cycling for transport and touring is promoted on a European level by the European Cyclists' Federation, and regular conferences are held under the auspices of Velo City, whereas global conferences are coordinated by Velo Mondial
Biking assessories that some consider helpful include a lock, pump, gloves, cycling shorts (with pad), clips to hold wide trousers/slacks/jeans, cycling shoes, spare tubes, CO2 cartridges as a possible replacement for a portable tire pump, water bottle and water bottle cage and tire levers.

 Who We Are
Brevets are open to all cycle tourists whether or not they are members of a club, society, or federation.
Upon completing the brevet, it is the riders responsibility to submit their route card to the organizer or another person designated by the organiser.
Medals noting the successful completion of a brevet are bronze colored for the 200km, silver colored for the 300 km, red for the 400 km, golden for the 600 km and silver for the 1,000 km.

 2007 Brevets
In cycling, it means a hard-riding enthusiast who is trying to complete a long randonnee within a certain time allotment.
The shortest Brevet is a 200km (125 miles) and is an entry point for those looking for a challenge greater than our standard centuries, the longest is the 1200km (720 miles plus) done in 90 hours or less with little rest or time to waste.
We ride at night on the longer brevets, and it is recommended to have two forms of headlights, a Primary Headlight bright enough to see the road ahead, and a Secondary smaller one used to be seen by motorists, and two taillights, one used as Primary, the other as backup.

Rocky Mountain Cycling Club 2004 Brevet Rules and Tips
To participate in a brevet, a rider must submit a registration form, sign a waiver of liability, and pay a registration fee (if any) set by the event organizer.
Alternatively, the brevet organizer may specify an "informational checkpoint" where the rider is to note some feature of the surroundings on the brevet card, along with the time.
The brevet card will be returned to the rider after the brevet has been verified and a certificate number issued.

 RUSA: FAQ
This is because the brevet medal design changes the year after each PBP, so to minimize expenses, the ACP likes to have the exact count prior to striking the last set of medals before the new design is used.
It is given out to each PBP rider at the start of the event since the brevet series is also the requirement to enter PBP, but other randonneurs not going to PBP, or those doing the SR series in other years, may purchase this medal through their RBA as well.
Brevets sanctioned by RUSA are of the "allure libre" type since we are affiliated with the ACP.

 Rider Expectations OR Randonneurs
Brevet participants should be aware of the inherent risks of long-distance cycling and must understand that they have responsibility for their own safety.
Riders are eligible to move up one distance from a previously completed RUSA sanctioned brevet in the same or previous season or attempt a brevet of equal distance completed within the last four seasons.
All riders are reminded that any failure to conduct the ride in accordance with these Brevet Rider Expectations, the RUSA rules for riders, applicable laws, or any special instructions or equipment requirements for this ride may result in a warning, time penalty, or disqualification.

Brevet Week is intended as a way for cyclists to qualify for Paris Brest Paris who do not have a convenient series of brevets near their home.

Brevet Week riders will be expected to bring lights and reflectors that exceed the state law for bicycle safety.

Elite track sprinters are able to attain an instantaneous maximum output of around 2,000 watts, or in excess of 25 watts/kg; elite road cyclists may produce 1,600 to 1,700 watts as an instantaneous maximum in their burst to the finish line at the end of a five-hour long road race.
Even at moderate speeds, most cycling energy is spent in overcoming aerodynamic drag, which increases with the square of speed; therefore, power needs increase approximately with the cube of speed.
In areas in which cycling is popular and encouraged, cycle-parking facilities using bicycle racks, lockable ´´mini-garages´´, and patrolled cycle parks are used to reduce theft.

Brevet (pronounced bruh-váy) is the French word for a cycling event in which a given distance is to be covered within a proscribed time limit.

 felixwong.com » Davis 200k Brevet
Since “brevets” originate from France, which doesn’t subscribe to the juvenile English-American “imperial” system of measurements, they are all in kilometers: namely, 200km, 300km, 400km, and 600km.
I say thankfully, because the first (and last) brevet I had ever done up to this point was the 1999 Davis 200km Brevet, which was the coldest and wettest ride I have ever done.
In this 200k brevet it is indeed one of the more difficult climbs, but still it is only 6-7% grade, and it is not particularly long, which I define as requiring 45-90 minutes, such as something like Page Mill Rd., or Mt. Diablo.

Each brevet is designed to challenge and prepare the long distance cyclists for the next ride in the series and act as a qualifier for Boston - Montreal — Boston (1200 km) and Paris - Brest Paris (1200 km).
A brevet is not a race, although the ride is timed and some riders will seek a personal best time, the primary goal is simply to finish.

As you probably know, there are brevets of various distances (200 kilometers, 300, 400, 600, 1000, and 1200), but for now we'll look at the shortest, and, in the view of many, most enjoyable event.
Take note that a brevet is not a race: a randonneur undertakes a long-distance "randonnée" to earn his brevet and medal, not to defeat his fellow riders.
The rules of the Randonneurs Mondiaux clearly state that brevets are not competitive events and that during the event each rider is considered to be on a personal ride.
