The Brewster Buffalo, or Brewster F2A, is a fighter aircraft that was the first monoplane used by the United States Navy.
The Brewster Aeronautical Corporation made a proposal, along with Grumman for the F4F Wildcat, and Seversky.

The Brewster Buffalo, or Brewster F2A fighter aircraft was the first monoplane to equip a United States Navy squadron.
It originated with a Navy request of 1936 for a new generation of aircraft carrier-based fighters.
However, the Buffalo was clearly not going to survive against Messerschmitts, so they were sent to the Far East, equipping RAF, RAAF, and RNZAF squadrons in Singapore and Malaya, where they proved equally incapable of surviving against the Japanese Zero

How the Brewster Aeronautical Corporation, a company that had been well-known throughout the 19th century as a buggy-maker became an airplane company in the early 1930s is one of those wonders of American capitalism known only to the participants.
Nevertheless, by 1932, the company was engaged in subcontracting aeronautical parts at its factory on Long Island when they decided to hire Dayton T. Brown as Chief Designer and concentrate their efforts on the carrier-based aircraft market for the U.S. Navy.
The success of the SBA-1 had given Dayton Brown credibility with the Bureau of Aeronautics that was sufficient to result in his XF2A-1 being selected as the Navy's first monoplane fighter.

However, on March 10, 1923, it was decided that the emphasis should be placed on type of aircraft, not the manufacturer, so the manufacturer's letter was placed after the mission letter.
