Brewster County, the largest county in Texas, is located in the Trans-Pecos region of West Texas, and is the site of Big Bend National Park, the largest park in the state.
Brewster County is bordered by Presidio County to the west, Jeff Davis County to the northwest, Pecos County and Terrell County to the east, and the Rio Grande to the south.
The first Brewster County elections were held on February 4, 1887, when Murphyville was selected as county seat; on March 14 of that year a contract was let for the construction of the Brewster County courthouse and jail.

Brewster County is a county located in western part of the U.S. state of Texas, along the border with Mexico.
Brewster is named for Henry Percy Brewster, a secretary of war for the Republic of Texas.
In the county, the population was spread out with 22.20% under the age of 18, 14.80% from 18 to 24, 24.50% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 14.60% who were 65 years of age or older.

Brewster County is bordered by Presidio County to the west, Jeff Davis County to the northwest, Pecos County and Terrell County to the east, and the Rio Grande to the south.
Brewster County comprises 6,169 square miles of largely rough and mountainous terrain, with elevations ranging from 1,700 to 7,825 feet above sea level; the latter elevation, the tenth highest in the state, is at Emory Peak.
The county population rose from 6,478 in 1940 to 7,309 in 1950; dropped to 6,434 in 1960; and climbed again, to an all-time high of 7,780, in 1970, before declining slightly to 7,573 in 1980.

The Brewster County Courthouse in Alpine is the only one they ever had (like neighboring Marfa).
On March 14, 1887, soon after Brewster County was organized, the commissioners ordered that architects be contacted by letter to discuss plans for a courthouse and jail, the former to cost no more than $12,000 to $15,000, and the jail to cost no more than $12,000.
The courthouse was finished probably in November 1887, and throughout its construction the county commissioners met every few days, or at least quite often as is shown by their minutes, but not a word could be found in regard to the contractors, nor anything else relative to the construction.

In July 2004, Marathon Independent School District (Marathon ISD), in Brewster County, Texas, was identified as one of 54 school districts in the state meeting the criteria that initiate an Ap-praisal Standards Review (ASR) of the county appraisal district that serves them.
The Brewster CAD review evaluated five functional areas: board of directors (governance and management); appraisal district policies, procedures and operations (assessment administration); information processing systems (information processing and data collection); staff-ing, personnel qualifications and positions (resources and management); and adherence to generally accepted appraisal practices.
Brewster CAD received an ASR because the 2003 PVS found that the CAD was inconsistently appraising in every category where a sampling of properties was tested.

The railroad needed control of the spring as a source of water for its steam engines, so it entered into an agreement with the Murphys to change the name of the section and settlement to Murphyville in exchange for a contract to use the spring.
In November of 1883 the Murphys registered a plat for the town of Murphyville with the county clerk of Presidio County.
It is often spoken of as the "heart of the Big Bend," the "Alps of Texas," "out where the West begins," and the "economic, cultural, and recreational center for Trans-Pecos Texas." Alpine was incorporated by 1929.
