Asawa reports that when he first came on the scene, "People would look up when I'd start singing, be shocked by my high voice, look down at the program to see who I was, and then look back up and watch me again.
Among Asawa's fantasy roles are Rossini's Tancredi, Malcolm in Rossini's La Donna del Lago and the contralto pants role in Donizetti's Anna Bolena.
Asawa, who is gay, has never felt that his sexual orientation was assumed or addressed by his singing.

Asawa's voice has a sweet and fairly clean alto character, but the desired strenth and passion of the counter tenor labeling is obviously lacking.
Asawa's voice can be something more than a young alto with an overindulgent rubato complex.
Asawa, but I do hope he will be braver with the timbres and colors in his voice.

Japanese American countertenor Brian Asawa (born 1966) studied music at UC Santa Cruz, UCLA and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
After a two year association as a young artist with San Francisco Opera in 1991-92, he became the first countertenor to win the Plácido Domingo Operalia International Opera Competition (1994) and was chosen Seattle Opera's Artist of the Year (1996-97).
Asawa's discography includes four solo recital discs ranging from Dowland and Campion to Rachmaninov and Ned Rorem.

I do have most of his recordings, and am very familiar with his voice, but I was more interested in hearing the ever charming and inventive Ned Rorem in his latest foibles.

The 2000-01 season began with a return to San Francisco Opera as Athamas in Semele, and he recently made his Zurich Tonhalle debut in concerts of the Handel Messiah and his Italian debut as Oberon in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream at Teatro di San Carlo in Naples.
Asawa also gives many solo recitals including recent engagements at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Dresden Musikfestspiele and Concertgebouw Brugge.

The juxtapositioning of the orchestral suite in the middle of a vocal album was a little odd, but the music IS very nice, and does flow with the album order.
Probably not destined to become a classic for either performer or composer, but worth the price to experience Asawa's technical navigation of weighty and ponderous writing as well as the sheer candor of Rorems writing.
The music is challenging and there are points at which I really wish his voice were more emotional but in the less dramatic passages, he achieves a sound that is direct and graceful.
