	Brian Auger & The Trinity: The Best of Brian Auger & The Trinity
		British jazz-rock organist Brain Auger and his group The Trinity (Dave Ambrose on bass and Clive Thacker on drums), together with singer Julie Driscoll (aka Julie Tippett), scored a #5 UK (#106 in the US) single hit in 1968 with a cover of Bob Dylan and Rick Danko's "This Wheel's on Fire".
		Auger later had several albums and singles that charted, both with and without Driscoll present.
		Driscoll and Auger's version of this song, originally recorded by the Band and released in 1968 on Music from Big Pink, first appeared on LP on this 1970 compilation The Best of Brian Auger & The Trinity.

		Auger anticipated fusion by a couple of years, mixing jazz and pop music in 1967 with the third incarnation of the Brian Auger Trinity.
		Auger’s success at adapting well-known rock tunes varied, but when things clicked, as they did on Donovan’s "Season of the Witch" and the Doors’ "Light My Fire," he was able to integrate his improvisational skills as a jazz musician with a straightforward rock beat.
		Auger gave himself more solo time, but he never seemed to run out of good ideas or feeling, no matter how many solos he took.

		new project The Trinity; with her on board, combining jazzy takes of pop and soul recordings along with Brian’s instrumental jazz tones (and his sole vocal outing, the exceptional Spencer Davis Group homage ‘Black Cat’) debut Open genuinely impresses.
		And when Ms Driscoll sings they really hit their stride: Lowell Fulson’s ‘Tramp’ is tackled with a gritty club soul edge, band original and duet ‘Break It Up’ is a funky Stax-a-like whilst ‘A Kind Of Love In’ and ‘Season Of The Witch’ sit in most comfortably with the psychedelic haze of ’67.
		The tune is sublime, if Julie Driscoll (or someone of her calibre) had sung it, it would be a classic, but Auger’s thin voice just wavers around and irritates.

		A tad on "da fonkie" side, but Auger is a killer keyboardist that can really shred a Hammond (check out the title cut to "Planet Earth Calling") And if you can't get no sugar when "Bumpin' On Sunset" is playing (the studio version), call it quits or become a monk!
		I've got Brian Auger and Oblivion Express' "Closer To It" from 1973 and you're absolutely right--this guy can play some mean Hammond.
