Clough's unique ability to make great players out of journeymen footballers came from a motivational force that was his greatest gift.
Clough had sold key players like Teddy Sheringham without replacing them, sold tickets on the fl market, accepted bungs and throughout the season appeared on TV in an alcoholic haze with little connection to reality or his team's obvious plight.
Clough's journey from a poor Middlesbrough childhood to the top of his trade and beyond ended on the 20th of September 2004.

Clough was made an Inaugural Inductee of the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002 in recognition of his impact as manager.
Clough died of stomach cancer on 20 September 2004, at the age of 69.
Clough dedicated his autobiography in 1994 to Taylor and when given the freedom of Nottingham also paid tribute to him, as he did in 1999 when a bust was unveiled of Clough at the City Ground.

Clough senior retired as manager while Clough junior was sold to Liverpool in a £2.75 million deal, but the evergreen form of veteran striker Ian Rush and the emergence of the brilliant Robbie Fowler saw Clough struggle to hold down a first-team place at Anfield.
By January 1996, Clough was fed up of playing in the Liverpool reserves and he agreed to move to Manchester City in a £1.5 million deal.

However, the omnipotent figure of Brian Clough was always pervasive at Forest, in all its press exposure and even the daily club work.
I just hope that Clough is remembered for the immense managerial skills he had, and the uncompromising managerial style he created.

When Brian Clough and Peter Taylor arrived at Derby in 1967 the club was languishing in the lower reaches of the Second Division and could have had no idea about the glories it would enjoy under the pair.

As a person Brian Clough was in your face,opinionated and called a spade a spade.
One of my favourites was the pre-season team photo of Clough as a player at Sunderland with a pipe in his mouth for which he incurred the wrath of his manager.
Another favourite part was when he mocks the modern day self-appointed TV experts with all their earnest match and formation analysis and talk of "diagonal runs and spinning off the shoulder of the last defender".
