At the press conference called to announce his candidacy for the leadership, Greig was asked what action he would take on the 10-point plan for party reform, pushed by the "gang of four" Democrat senators and which forced Natasha Stott Despoja out last week.
The problem, as articulated by Greig himself, is that the party membership is now some way to the left of those who vote for the Democrats.
Greig, the would-be "rescuer" of the Democrats, sees his job as finding a way to meld the centre-left membership and centre-right voter base.

 Interview: Democrat Brian Greig
GREIG: Well, I don't feel that Senator Lyn Allison is too keen on being associated with that terminology and I must say of those four senators in terms of media performance, or lack of it, she's played a key role in helping calm the waters to some degree.
GREIG: Look, I gather that she might me. Senator Allison is actually quite good at that and she was the senator who was most keen, and I understand is still most keen, on getting some kind of mediation process happening.
GREIG: I can't see it coming to that, but I don't think particularly people like Senator Cherry, who, you know, is obviously keen to be re-elected in Queensland because he's filled a casual vacancy, would do that because there'd be no party infrastructure for their successful returns.

Greig notes that courts in other states will rule differently in the application of noncompetes based on the particular case, such as a worker laid off as part of a downsizing decision versus one who quit or was fired for cause.
Greig suggests looking at the reasonableness of the individual elements in the clause, perhaps narrowing the scope of the area they cannot work in or reducing the duration.
Greig sometimes sees a situation he calls "the inevitable disclosure doctrine," when no noncompete has been signed, but an employee goes to work for a competitor in the exact job he or she previously held and "can't help but use information [the employee] learned from the [other] company that was secret.

Greig's leftist Australian Democrats party, along with another small party, holds the balance of power in the Senate, and frequently sends legislation it opposes to committees.
The committee is due to report back to the Senate by Oct. 7, but with a general election expected at some point between mid-September and the end of the year, the legislation could run out of time if parliament is dissolved before it is enacted.
