Brian Harradine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brian Harradine (born January 9, 1935), Australian politician, was an independent member of the Australian Senate from 1975 to 2005, representing the state of Tasmania.
Harradine worked as an official for the Federated Clerks Union and then went on to serve as Secretary General of the Tasmanian Trades and Labour Council between 1964 and 1976 and by virtue of this position, a member of the executive of the Australian Council of Trade Unions.
While a member of the Australian Labor Party, Harradine's socially conservative politics driven by his Catholic background made him a prime target for accusations of sympathy for the Democratic Labor Party and he was expelled from the ALP by the Federal Executive.

Brian Harradine: No, it goes deeper than that and it does go to first principles, that is to say that the most vulnerable of people need protection, no matter at what stage of their life.

Harradine, who with other independents and minor parties holds the balance of power in the Senate, has persuaded the minister for health, Sen, Kay Patterson, to introduce regulations to require product information sheets -- included with medicines after Jul. 1, 2004 -- to disclose whether embryonic cells were used in the development of drugs.
Harradine and many in both the religious and scientific community vehemently but unsuccessfully opposed the legislation, which was strongly backed by the pharmaceutical industry and a number of major medical research centres.
Harradine argued that if the government was willing to regulate in favour of consumers so that foods contained genetically modified content or petrol containing ethanol, then consumers of medicines should be informed too about what went into their manufacture.

Your beef with Brian Harradine was that he is guided by his moral positions which you find it distasteful as he was allegedly committing a grave democratic offence by trying to get his views on issues like abortion, pornography etc instead of shutting up and join a church and stay out of democratic debate.
