 SI.com - NFL - Banks: Billick fed up with replay - Sunday October 26, 2003 10:07PM
Denver successfully challenged an 11-yard second-quarter reception by Heap that was ruled a touchdown on the field, and in the third quarter, Baltimore unsuccessfully challenged a play on which officials ruled that Heap never had possession.
Heap appeared to have the ball firmly in grasp as he landed with both feet down in the end zone and took two steps.
But Heap again found the replay spotlight in the third quarter, when he appeared to catch a 10-yard pass from Kyle Boller, run a couple steps and then fumble out of bounds as he was tackled by Denver safety Kenoy Kennedy.

Heap was also on the Royal Society group that organised a partial 'peer review' of Pusztai's work while it was still unpublished - an act The Lancet described as 'a gesture of breathtaking impertinence to the Rowett Institute scientists who should be judged only on the full and final publication of their work.'
Heap has been involved with bioethics at the European Commission and the Nuffield Council on Bioethics and, together with Derek Burke and Mike Gale, contributed to the Nuffield report on GM crops which contains an appendix which is highly critical of Pusztai.
When the Lancet published Pusztai's research, after it had been successfully peer reviewed, Heap attacked the publication of the paper and claimed it showed that the rats were being starved and that this, and not the GM food in their diet, accounted for the damage they sustained.

Java theory and practice: Urban performance legends, revisited
Initially, the half that is in use forms one big block of available memory; the allocator satisfies allocation requests by returning the first N bytes of the portion that is not in use, moving a pointer that separates the "used" part from the "free" part, as shown by the pseudocode in Listing 1.
When allocating memory from the heap, the contents of that memory are garbage -- whatever bits happen to be left over from the last time that memory was used.
If you allocate a block of memory on the heap that is not already in the cache, execution will stall while the contents of that memory are brought into the cache.

Java theory and practice: Garbage collection and performance
Because a copying collector is used for the young generation, the free space in the heap is always contiguous so that allocation of a new object from the heap can be done through a simple pointer addition, as shown in Listing 1.
Similarly, because copying collectors do not visit dead objects, a heap with a large number of temporary objects, which is a common situation in Java applications, costs very little to collect; simply trace and copy the live objects to a survivor space and reclaim the entire heap in one fell swoop.
IBM JVMs use a technique called thread-local heaps, by which each thread requests a small block of memory (on the order of 1K) from the allocator, and small object allocations are satisfied out of that block.

HEAP: Yes, I'd be happy to try to do that, because I think it's very important to make people aware of the very positive elements that are coming out of the NATO Science Program and the new science for security program.

HEAP: Well Security Through Science Program brings together new science and technology that's relevant to topics like, for example, the development of new vaccines, the production of foods in hostile environments, using genetically modified crops that can be grown in areas that previously they've been unable to develop; and also in connection with environmental population.

Seven Scientific Academies Support GM Crops
The problem with GM crops, Professor Heap said, was that they were "market led" and it had been hard for consumers to see any benefit.
In an unprecedented report by seven independent academies from both the developed and developing world, experts agreed that genetic modification of crops is crucial to addressing the problem of the world's growing population and shrinking land for growing food.
Prof Brian Heap, the Royal Society vice-chairman, said that 800 million people, or 18 per cent of the world's population, did not have enough food.
