Brian Helgeland is the genius behind A Knight's Tale.
Director Brian Helgeland's The Order, you may recall, was originally slated to open Jan. 17, but 20th Century Fox postponed the release because of some unintentionally funny special effects.
Written by Helgeland (A Knight's Tale), this unique story--like most supernatural tales involving religion, stigmata and exorcism--is incredibly scary, but these blatantly silly special effects only interrupt the chilling tale. The rest of The Order, with its cool bluish hues and dusty sets, is extremely well shot.

 Paul Fischer Interviews Brian Helgeland
Whether he is a screenwriter for hire or a writer/director, Brian Helgeland thrives on mixing and matching his work.
Brian: I think just because, I think because between the actors, production designer, composer and everybody, we all had ideas, we all wanted to kind of push and try to see if we could make it work.
Brian: I think as a director just because I realize that though I like a couple of things that I have written that I have not directed, I am proud of them but I have sort of a big detachment for them so I just don't feel part of them.

 IGN: Interview: Brian Helgeland
Helgeland: I was actually really kind of bummed out about that, because the quote they made up, they had like five real quotes that were like it, but they made up a quote so they could have the exact quote they wanted.
Helgeland: It's interesting because this movie, I think, underperformed a bit theatrically and had the misfortune of coming out the week after Shrek and the week before Pearl Harbor, so it was kind of lost in all of that.
Helgeland: It really comes down to I have a kind of eclectic taste in movies that I like and movies that I'm interested in, so really it's just whatever is interesting at a given time for me to write and try to direct or sometimes write for another director.

LEHANE: Well, Brian had adapted what I consider one of the greatunadaptables in "L.A. Confidential." And he really nailed it and he got thespirit of the book.
HELGELAND: When I heard Tim was being cast, my initial reaction was, 'He's too big physically.' And when I saw him on screen, he's aware of that himselfand he's almost shrunk himself, which is an example of the magic of movies, howthings can come together in ways that you don't expect.
NORRIS: That was Dennis Lehane, author of the novel "Mystic River." We alsospoke with Brian Helgeland, who wrote the screenplay.

It is safe to say that writer-director Brian Helgeland doesn't compromise himself for anyone, including major Hollywood studios.
In 1997, Helgeland saw three of his screenplays produced: Kevin Costner's legendary bomb, The Postman; the acclaimed James Ellroy adaptation L.A. Confidential (for which Helgeland shared a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar with Curtis Hanson); and Conspiracy Theory.
Helgeland sets his tale of jousting and swordplay in 14th-century Europe, but adds a twist — a modern-day rock music soundtrack and a 21st-century sensibility.

Helgeland peppers the film with many film noir touches, and Payback also has a deliberately dated '70's look (almost all of the telephones are rotary).

This brooding supernatural thriller was immediately dismissed by critics, and it's easy to see why it flopped: it's full of solemn, quasi-religious ruminations, it's murky in both visual and thematic content, and it demands the viewer's focused attention, which amounts to pissing in the shallow pool of big-studio filmmaking.
It is clear that director Helgeland researched several things about the Catholic church, to make the basis of the film.

We caught up with Helgeland recently to discuss his new film, his rise up the Hollywood ladder, and whether or not he still has love for the genre which gave him his start: Horror films.
HELGELAND: Yeah and I think by the end it's as true to the genre as any movie is or true to that kind of storyline.

SPLICEDwire | Brian Helgeland interview for "A Knight's Tale" (2001)
Helgeland has more than a decade of Hollywood experience under his belt as a writer (his screenplay credits run the gamut from "Nightmare On Elm Street 4" to "L.A. Confidential") and a director ("Payback") but you wouldn't know it to look at him or hear him speak.
He's like a cross between and exuberant 12-year-old boy and a soccer dad -- a combination that helps explain how he came to be wearing a sling on his right arm while he's traveling to promote his new film.

That's probably because both filmmakers fought the powers that be to make it so, relying on the courage of their convictions that they could make it as giddily cool as they envisioned it being.
Cool it is, especially in the case of Helgeland's fun-filled frolic, a goofball mishmash of influences ranging from Braveheart (1995) to baseball, Rob Roy (1995) to the rock & roll of AM radio in the 1970s.

Formerly a commercial fisherman in his native New England, Brian Helgeland changed his career path by moving to L.A. and inaugurated his screenwriting career by collaborating on the scripts for two horror movies: Renny Harlin's "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master" (1988), starring Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, and Englund's "976-EVIL" (1988).
Sticking with the same genre, Helgeland received his first solo screenwriting credit for "Highway to Hell" (1992) before beginning his relationship with Richard Donner as co-writer of the simple-minded action-thriller "Assassins" (1995) and flying solo on the disappointing "Conspiracy Theory" (1997), which teamed Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts in a muddled thriller....

He fared better as co-writer and co-producer of Curtis Hanson's critically-lauded adaptation of James Ellroy's noirish crime saga, "L.A. Confidential" but again stumbled as one of the writers of the futuristic drama "The Postman" (both 1997), directed by and starring Kevin Costner.
His second foray as a writer-director was the surprise success "A Knight's Tale" (2001), in which Helgeland cast Heath Ledger in the role of a mideval swashbuckler and set the story to a soundtrack of modern arena-rock anthems.
As a screenwriter, he adapted Michael Connelly's novel for the Clint Eastwood-directed crime drama "Blood Work" (2002), and Eastwood tapped him again to adapt Dennis Lehane's novel for the veteran actor's next directorial effort, the gritty, twisting and turning whodunnit "Mystic River" (2003).
