BRIAN HOUGHTON HODGSON - LoveToKnow Article on BRIAN HOUGHTON HODGSON
His father, Brian Hodgson, came of a family of country gentlemen, and his mother was a daughter of William Houghton of Manchester.
He succeeded, nevertheless, in concluding a satisfactory treaty in 1839; but lfl 1842 his policy, which involved an imperious attitude towards the native government, was upset by the interference of Lord Ellenborough, but just arrived in India and not unnaturally anxious to avoid trouble in Nepal during the conflict in Afghanistan.
Hodgson took upon himself to disobey his instructions, a breach of discipline justified to his own mind by his superior knowledge of the situation, but which the governorgeneral could hardly be expected to overlook.

 Hodgson's Blind Alley ?
In fact Hodgson nowhere asserts that belief in the Adi-Buddha is ;the most fundamental of Newar Buddhism's tenets; nor does he say that the Aisvarika school is dominant in Nepal.
Since Hodgson's schools bore no relation to what had by them been discovered to be the true state of affairs where Buddhist doctrinal disputes were concerned, it was naturally assumed that Hodgson must have been describing Nepalese schools of Buddhist, a pseudo-fact which was taken as further evidence of the supposed degeneracy of Nepalese Buddhism.
Hodgson was assistant Resident from 1825 to 1833 and Resident from 1833 to 1843.

Hodgson came as a diplomat to a turmoil-ridden Kathmandu court as representative of the East India Company, and played his part in the intrigue and skulduggery between a mad king, an ambitious queen regent, the Pandes, the Thapas and the Bahuns.
Hodgson befriended pandits and gubhajus of Kathmandu Valley (in particular the great Patan scholar Amritananda, who became a valued informant), who were impressed by his knowledge of Sanskrit and Farsi as well as his ascetic lifestyle devoted to learning.
Hodgson is also credited, while already in retirement in Darjeeling, with having convinced a reluctant viceroy to allow an eager Jang Bahadur to participate in the quelling of the Sepoy Mutiny 1857-58.

When Brian Hodgson arrived in Nepal in 1821 to begin his imperial tenure as British Resident, he was also in search of scientific facts.
The intimate and secluded relationship between Hodgson and his pandits, based on the elucidation of sacred texts, gave his research the status of a revealed historical truth about the religion and political past of Nepal.
Hodgson's collections about Nepali Buddhism became the very stuff as later histories of Nepal were made of.

Curated by Brian Hodgson, Northern Soul is an exhibition of paintings with a difference.
Using unusual materials, artists Brian Hodgson and Ben Long have found inspiration in their everyday surroundings to make beautiful objects and eye-catching images that make the viewer do a double-take and reconsider what art is about.
In this exhibition, Hodgson has gone a step further — instead of causing rust on shiny new sheet metal, he has used found metal panels, with varying degrees of wear, giving them a new lease of life by transforming them into objects that, while retaining their history, gain a new identity.

60 Wn. App. 12, THE STATE OF WASHINGTON, Respondent, v. BRIAN HODGSON, Petitioner.
Defendant, Brian Hodgson, as owner of Rawhide, Inc., was cited for failure to submit "fish receiving tickets" for geoduck clams harvested by Rawhide on state-owned subtidal tracts on which Rawhide had purchased the right to harvest such clams, in violation of WAC 220-69-240(7).«1»
The District Court dismissed the criminal complaint concluding that Rawhide was exempt, pursuant to WAC 220-69-240(3)(d), from the duty to submit fish receiving tickets.
At the outset, we reject Hodgson's contention that a license issued Rawhide by the Department of Fisheries prior to the issuance of the citation in question, registering Rawhide as an aquatic farmer precludes any criminal prosecution for a violation of WAC 220-69-240(7).
