Brian Jonestown Massacre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band founded in San Francisco, California in the early 1990s, led by Anton Newcombe.
The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a mash-up of the name of original Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones, and the infamous mass cult suicide at Jonestown.
The first BJM album, 1995's Methodrone approximates the UK shoegazing genre, but with their second record, Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request (a retread of an old Stones album title), they began the pastiche of '60s psychedelia that has characterized most of their music.

In the Brian Jonestown Massacre's endeavor to spread its poetic vision of truth, beauty and the power of humanity, the band has flooded the racks with releases in the past year.
Brian Jonestown Massacre probably isn't out to impress anyone or prove anything, and this lack of self-consciousness is part of the band's appeal.
While the record is short on true highlights, BJM offers an effective reminder that the level of cool achieved by garage bands has zero to do with the volume of their amps; it's something intrinsic, something that pours through even when the music appears (on the surface) more mellow.

The History of Rock Music. Brian Jonestown Massacre: biography, discography, reviews, links
He formed the Brian Jonestown Massacre in 1990, recruiting Dean Taylor and Jeff Davies on guitars, Joel Gion on maracas, and dedicating the group to the tragically departed Rolling Stones member.
Whether because of ineptitude or design, the BJM differ from other psychedelic revival groups in that their approach is rather amateurish, awkward and chaotic, closer to the ethos of the punks than to the pathos of the hippies.
Former Brian Jonestown Massacre's guitarist and vocalist Bobby Hecksher formed the Warlocks in 1998 to resurrect the rawer form of shoegazing.

Brian Jonestown Massacre - PopMatters Concert Review
Newcombe had his back to the audience for some reason, so his lyrics were kind of hard to hear, and his meandering, trippy guitar solo seemed oddly out of place in the presence of such a tight backing band.
With the audience rapidly decreasing, Newcombe seemed to realize that he had fucked up, and he tried to make it up to the crowd with a half-hearted "Thanks for hanging on...you guys are good people." "Fuck you, you suck," yelled a small voice from the back of the room.
The bands that BJM seem desperate to emulate, like Moby Grape, were great because they harnessed and focused their members' talents into complex songs that were more than merely repetitive riffs.

I first heard the BJM in songs that appeared on their early 90s album "Methodrone," and many of "Tepid's" best moments hearken back to this hazy/shoegazing/fuzzy/obsessive phase.
Hearing these heftier, ascending, revolving tracks within the larger BJM shuffle (no chronological order here, which is refreshing; the anthology is well-sequenced), much of their later work sounds rather scrawny.
Prior to seeing the movie I was pissed off with BJM because their Aussie gigs have mostly been washouts, with the usual rounds of drunk and stoned misconduct.

Splendid Magazine reviews The Brian Jonestown Massacre: We Are the Radio
Neither claim is likely to be true -- nothing in BJM's catalog suggests that he's a genius, and despite several hours of footage of Newcombe attacking band and audience members, he's probably not completely nutty, either.
Her phrasings' trilly tails are tastefully hinted at during "Seer", but slightly hidden behind lazy layers of acoustic guitar and electronic throbs.
The idea of heavy synth and electronic instrumentation seems out of place on a BJM album, but they're perfectly integrated here and in the instrumental "Teleflows vs. Amplification", whose ambient calm offers notes of such cleansing peace that it almost removes all blemishes from Newcombe's public image.

A collection of early recordings, Spacegirl and Other Favorites, followed on the band's own Tangible label in early 1996, and was the first of four Brian Jonestown Massacre LPs to appear that year; next up was the brilliant Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request, a full-blown homage to the Stones' glorious psychedelic-era excesses.
Recorded live in the studio, the grittier Take It From the Man! found the band exploring even broader territory; finally, the year ended with the release of Thank God for Mental Illness, a showcase for strong country and blues leanings.
Despite a continued lack of major distribution, the Brian Jonestown Massacre earned the largest profile of its career in 2004, when it became the unlikely focus of an award-winning documentary, DIG!, which charted the trials of Newcombe and those of his rival, Courtney Taylor, leader of the Dandy Warhols.

This album makes the case that extreme psychosis is sometimes a symptom of the creative process, as BJM does a high-wire act on the thin line between genius and rubber walls.
There is a strong country flavor to much of the main portion of the album, with a couple of songs that bring to mind the best work of Hank Williams, but there's also plenty of the choice '60s-based rock the band has become known for.

SPIN.com: Brian Jonestown Massacre Gets Ripped Off
Before a gig at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC, the Brian Jonestown Massacre had all of their equipment stolen from a van and rented trailer that they had parked in Brooklyn on September 19, says the blogmaster Brooklynvegan.com.
Among the items stolen were a Fender Bassman 1960s flface head, unique not only for its sound, but also the fact the "B" is flened out so that it reads "assman." Blogosphere pundits had no sympathy: "Karma has come to collect," read one post on Brooklynvegan.
Despite the stolen gear, Anton and company did manage to show up for their scheduled gig at the small NYC venue Pianos on last night, but in true Massacre fashion, ended up leaving the stage before completing a song.
