RTÉ.ie Sport - Swiss stalemate ends Irish dreams
Kerr and Ireland will no doubt look back on the leads they conceded against the Swiss in Basle, but more pertinently the late one in Israel, and the two-goal cushion at home to the Israelis, with all three games ending in draws.
Kerr gambled before kick-off with his team selection, opting for an untried central midfield pairing of Holland and John O'Shea, the latter starting in the role for the first time for his country after previously being employed at left-back.
Kerr brought on Elliott and Doherty in a desperate attempt to keep the dream alive, but other than a Steven Reid curler being tipped over by Pascal Zuberbuhler - his one and only save of the game - it was never going to happen for Ireland.

Tellingly, the FAI are withholding on an extension of Kerr's contract until the matter of qualification has been well and truly decided, and combined with the stirrings of criticism for the manager accumulating throughout the media, such growing unease has turned up the heat considerably.
Like McCarthy, Brian Kerr is often guilty of a little favouritism now and again, consistently naming the likes of Alan Quinn and Liam Miller in the squad when they are seeing little (if any) first-team football.
For all of Kerr's meticulous preparation, he seems unable to cope with the demands of enforced substitutions; the sight of a jaded Clinton Morrison having to signal to the bench in Tel Aviv to indicate that he could no longer go on is an image that could well sum up the manager's costly conservatism.
