Brian Lumley A Coven of Vampires Reviewed by Rick Kleffel
Lumley’s preface is certainly an excellent addition, as he recounts his childhood fascination with the pulps.
There’s an undertone of humor in all of Lumley’s blood and guts and stakes, which acts as something of an anti-coagulant for the overwrought drama.
There's something timelessly appealing about Lumley's unpretentious approach to horror, however, and what is here has been proved by time to be of enough interest to warrant a re-print.

The horror aspect is superb, but Lumley tries to explain the magic as a form of science which sits uncomfortably in the latter half of the twentieth century.

Lumley’s other novels include the ancient Egyptian fantasy Khai of Ancient Khem (aka Khai of Khem, 1981), the Psychomech (1984), Psychosphere (1984) and Psychamok (1985) trilogy, Demogorgon (1987), Elysia: The Coming of Cthulhu (1989), The House of Doors (1990) and The House of Doors: Second Visit (aka Maze of Worlds, 1998).
Lumley’s 1986 vampire story “Necros” became the basis for one of the first episodes of the Canadian erotic anthology TV series The Hunger (1997).

Granted, Lumleys characters are a lively bunch, but none tell the story as excitingly as he does, and the result is not unlike sitting down at the dinner table with a hearty appetite and hearing about a sumptuous banquet someone else attended.
Lumley has firmly staked out the territory of the vampire thriller, much as Anne Rice has that of vampire erotica, and Chelsea Quinn Yarbro that of the vampire historical romance.
In Invaders Brian Lumley does it again, l loved all of the Necroscope Series and was happy to see that his flair for taking you into the book so that you feel part of the story has not left him.

Lumley retains much of the florid melodrama that Stoker reveled in, with an increased explicitness suited to the present day.
Lumley provides more rationale than Stoker, and he also secularizes the legend, toning down the original's Christian aversion to "blasphemous" dialogue.
Lumley also broadens the scope, adding much to the story of psychic abilities, centered on the ultra-secret "E-Branch (`E' for ESP)" division of Britain's Secret Service.

Set in a world where the vampire villains are resurrected as regularly as the cinematic Frankenstein's monster, and where the psychic hero is forever channeling the thoughts of dead characters from previous episodes, this expansive 13th novel is distinguished mostly by its sense of d‚j… vu.
Lumley still excels at depicting heroes larger than life and horrors worse than death, but his rehash of earlier intrigues and plot twists bogs the tale down.
Brian Lumley appears to have written the extremely unsatisfying ending of the series hastily, which made me question why I had bothered to read the Necroscope series at all.

Its abundance of futuristic technojargon and gizmology notwithstanding, this sequel to Lumley's 1990 SF adventure, The House of Doors, is a throwback to drive-in B-movies of the 1950s, replete with evil space invaders bent on world domination and selfless human heroes.
Lumley's sequel to House of Doors (Tor, 1990) covers familiar territory as his characters confront a series of nightmarish realities contained within an extra-dimensional alien machine.
I have always loved Lumley's work, but a common foible in all of those which are later books in a series is that they they falter and are a laborious read if you missed the first installment.

The Brian Lumley deities are supernatural entities created for the Cthulhu Mythos universe of shared fiction by British horror writer Brian Lumley.
Lumley's writings have been criticized as making the deities too "human", assigning them familial relationships and moral positions (good versus evil), while Lovecraft's gods are generally described as being beyond any concept of human morality.

Although it is lesser than the unparraleled books in that sequence, (much as his other "stand alone" House of Doors), it remains a good read for his die-hard fans who are willing to give a good horror novel that has no mention of vampires, a chance.
The only real problem with the book was the ending which didn't quite sit right with me. I think that Lumley should try a sequel to flesh out the original ideas in Demogorgon and re-invent the judeo-christian mythos horror genre, much as he did for the vampire and Lovecraftian genres.
After the good work that I had come to expect of Lumley after reading some of his other works such as the Necroscope series, I was unpleasantly surprised at how bad "demogorgon" was.
