The FemBots, another Toronto outfit, was formed by a pair of multi-instrumentalists, Dave MacKinnon and Brian Poirier, who sought refuge from the conventional quartet approach, first by insulating themselves as a duo and later by inviting a growing number of guests to join the creative enterprise.
"Brian and I got the material to maybe 35 or 40 per cent of where we wanted it to be and left it for everybody else to turn it into what it is. And they did a miraculous job.
It is ironic, perhaps, that as MacKinnon and Poirier have gradually surrendered a degree of artistic control, the songs have become increasingly tighter.
