Brian Mantia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Raised in the South Bay city of Cupertino, CA, Mantia became interested in such ‘groove heavy' artists as James Brown, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix early on, but it wasn't until he was 16 years old that Mantia began playing drums.
Shortly thereafter, Mantia acquired the nickname “Brain" while playing in a high school concert band, due to his obsession with the complex Anthony Cirone book, "Portraits in Rhythm." Mantia continued to perfect his drumming skills, by studying at such music schools as the Percussion Institute of Technology in Hollywood.
The late ‘90s saw Mantia appear on releases by Godflesh (Songs of Love and Hate, Love and Hate in Dub), and longtime friends, Primus (whom Mantia was briefly a member of in 1989, before a broken foot led to his exit).

However, Mantia's drumming style is considerably more straight forward than Alexander's fast and finessy style.

Two of the core members here do have some metallic ties, most notably the star of the show, enigmatic guitar hero Buckethead (most recently seen playing in Guns'n'Roses), with former Primus drummer Brian "Brain" Mantia also serving time here.
For the traditionally metal-minded who are curious as to what this sounds like, Praxis is a risky bet -- there's very little in the way of conventional metal, but there is plenty of flashy guitarwork from Buckethead, alongside healthy doses of funk, electronica, sampling, and just plain weirdness.
