In the Last Chance race, Brian got caught up in a brutal first-turn pile-up and decided to save his energy for the 250cc competition (that didn't stop him from sticking serious air, though, as he lived up to his nickname "Flyin'" Brian with big-time triple jumps).

Dr Mason's connection with Christchurch goes back to his childhood, his education at Christchurch Boys High School and subsequently Canterbury University College where he obtained his first degree in 1936 followed by Masters degrees in chemistry and geology.
